SLIDE 2 — Design of Emergent Interaction Systems —
Qualities of use …
- It’s necessary for a designer to know what a product is, and
meaning of it
- Simplifies the design work and implementation
- What one design it for
- What one design into the system.
- Does it exist similar accepted qualities of use for interaction
design as in the ”world of cars”?
- Is the area so unique?
- Or does it exist more general qualities of use?
- The app-market has it changed this?

Qualities of use …
- Qualities of use and structural properties
- Objectivity and subjectivity
- Measurable or not, the important thing is to be able to reason
and think around these properties
- We need powerful tool (cognitive tools)
- Articulation as approach and design skill
- Experience does not make it worse
- Qualities for a product are not general and are not directly
transferable others
- Critical thinking and reasoning

Articulation and experience
- The Sami language is greatly influenced by the traditional Sami
way of life. It is very rich in words and nuances relating to the nature and reindeer herding. In the reindeer herding Sami language is especially helpful because there are several hundred words concerning reindeers: age, color, body type or how the horns look. With one Sami word you can say something that needed many Swedish word.
- In Sápmi the ground is covered by snow for more than half of
the year and there are more than a hundred words to describe snow and frost. They indicate the amount of snow, the snow's texture, its buoyancy, snow surface, different types of skiing and sleighing, the pristine snow, traces of various kinds, frost and snow on shrubs and trees. The words also comprises bare spots, melting snow and patches of snow in the summer.

Qualities of use …
- Measurable or not - all and a little more will be established
- r designed into a design situation
- Impossible to take everything into account
- The complexity
- The frames for the project will put pressure on the
design work
- External factors will limit the design
- Culture, trends, …
- Once again ... it is necessary for a designer to know what their
product is and do ...
