Applying to Citywide & Charter Schools

  • Submitting applications for Citywide

schools (schools-based applications) and/or entering the lottery for Charter schools in no way impacts your child’s D15 middle school articulation.

  • These are processes that are handled by

separate divisions of the DOE.

  • We encourage families to explore all of the
  • ptions available in finding the best match

for their children.

Tours & Open Houses

  • Not mandatory but highly recommended

that you & your child take tours of schools.

  • Tour as many schools as you possibly
  • can. The more you learn about the schools

the more options you give yourself.

  • One of the best ways to learn about

schools & see them in action.

  • Attending a tour does not impact your

child’s attendance.

Tours & Open Houses

How to Schedule a Tour/Open House

  • Contact Middle Schools to get info on how

to sign-up

– Each school will have a different sign-up system (online, telephone, etc.) – Some schools will have several tour dates available; others will have one day for an Open House – Tours & Open House sign-up starts in late September/early October with tours taking place from October to December

Things you need to know – FOR EVERYONE

  • The schools on your Middle School

Application will be determined by the address listed in the DOE system, ATS.

  • All PS 29 Middle School Applications will

at-least reflect District 15 Middle Schools.

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Things you need to know – if your home district is not District 15 .

  • Your Middle School application will reflect

District 15 school AND the middle schools that are in your home district.

  • The Middle School Guides of your home

District will not be available at PS 29. When they are made available they will be

  • nline and in your home District’s Family

Reception Center

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Make sure that your child’s name and mailing address is correct in the NYC DOE system, ATS. This is to be done in person in the Main Office. Changing the mailing address on the blue card IS NOT ENOUGH. You must provide Maureen Monaco with a current gas or electric bill so that she can update the information.

For Application Accuracy……..

slide-26
SLIDE 26

When they become available, applications will be sent home with your child and you will receive notice via e-mail. Typically, applications are distributed in November and due back some time in December.

Application Ranking

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Application Ranking

  • In the past, after students ranked their school

choices in order of preference, those schools were given 2 lists. The 1st list was of all the students who ranked them 1st or 2nd choice on the application. These students were then considered before anyone else (interviews, auditions, etc) and often times schools would get filled just off of their 1st & 2nd choice students. The 2nd list would then be of the students who ranked them 3rd or higher. Most times, these students were not considered by some schools, because the schools filled their seats with 1st & 2nd choice students.

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Application Ranking

  • In an effort to create a more equitable

process middle schools will no longer have access as to where a student ranked them

  • n the application. Middle schools will be

sent a list of ALL students who ranked them on the application. Each student will be considered equally regardless of where

  • r how he/she ranked a school on the

application.

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-30
SLIDE 30

Application Ranking & Matching

  • Ranking of schools will only be used by

Enrollment to match students with schools. Students are matched with schools based

  • n information Enrollment receives from

the middle schools, how schools are ranked on the application and seat availability.

Assessments/ Interviews/Auditions

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Assessments/Interviews

  • Due to the change in the application

process, we can’t speak on what methods schools are going use to assess students.

  • After only one year operating with this new

change, Middle schools might find it necessary to tweak their process for assessments.

  • Once we have that information we will

share it with all 5th grade families.

Placement Offers & Appeals

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-34
SLIDE 34

District 15 Placement Offers

  • Placement Offer Letters are sent out after

ALL students have been interviewed, typically in April/May.

  • Your child will be offered ONE placement

which will be based on the choices you made on the application, school criteria, school interviews & space availability.

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-35
SLIDE 35

Appeals

  • If you’re dissatisfied with the placement
  • ffer your child receives, you will have an
  • pportunity to appeal the placement.
  • Appeals are another opportunity to apply

for the school(s) of your choice.

  • An appeal is not a guarantee that you will

get the placement you requested and are

  • ften times based on the availability of

space in a school and the school’s admissions criteria.

Created by School Counselor, Cara Turnbull

slide-36
SLIDE 36

Citywide & Charter School Offers

  • Citywide school offers typically happen

around the same time as the District school offers.

  • Charter school decisions typically happen

before the District school offers (April).

  • Once you’ve received all your offers you

have to let Cara know what offer you’re going to accept.
