The Art Divine Mission Pietàs are licensed by the Vatican Observatory Foundation, sponsored by Prince Lorenzo de Medici, and funded by notable philanthropists, such as Richard and Esther Stewart, who are personally donating 12 of these Pietàs to Catholic locations around the world. Each of the castings are faithful to Michelangelo’s original conception: the profound beauty and acceptance in Mary’s face, the perfect form of Christ’s body and the masterful sculpting of the robes and the stone, together show why this sculpture became an iconic image of Christianity and instantly made Michelangelo the most celebrated and revered artist in history. Richard and Esther Stewart have devoted their lives to assisting non-profit organizations and their related causes. Among the many such organizations that they have been associated with is the Help Worldwide Foundation, which the Stewarts founded with the mission of training other non-profit organizations to be self-sufficient using the ongoing fundraising mechanism to the Help Worldwide loyalty program. The Stewarts have been, and continue to serve as, primary funders of the company’s Pietà Mission project through their purchases and gifting of sculptures.

September 4, 2015 PRESS RELEASE Philadelphia, PA (September 4, 2015) – The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 and Arte Divine today announced that a life-size marble casting of Michelangelo’s ‘Pietà’ will be unveiled and blessed by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. at the Philadelphia Convention Center during the opening ceremony for the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 Congress on September 22, 2015. This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the crucifixion. The Vatican Observatory Foundation has authorized and licensed the creation of 100 Pietà marble castings from a mold derived from the original Pietà. While some have been acquired by private collectors, most of these castings have been acquired by generous private or corporate benefactors and then donated to Catholic cathedrals, churches, hospitals, and academic settings as legacy gifts. Of all his sculptures, the Pietà is the only sculpture Michelangelo ever signed. He considered it to be the consummate expression of both his personal talent and the Divine inspiration that he believed to be the guiding hand behind his work. “We are so grateful to have World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 selected to display an exact replica of one

  • f the greatest works of religious art ever created,” said Donna

Crilley Farrell, Executive Director for the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015. “To be able to share this truly moving exhibit with visitors coming to Philadelphia from around the world is an extraordinary opportunity.”

Arte Divine, in cooperation with the Vatican’s Observatory Foundation (VOF), has authorized the creation of 100 of these Pietà marble castings for placement throughout the

  • world. These exquisite castings are being acquired by generous

private or corporate benefactors and may then be donated to Catholic cathedrals, churches, hospitals, and academic settings

  • r institutions as legacy gifts. A gifted Pietà can have, in turn,

very real and significant long term benefits for the Church or

  • ther organization receiving the donation, in terms of attracting

increased attendance and participation from existing members, new members and other visitors following a Pieta’s installation, as well as more generally raising awareness about the sculpture recipient’s religious or charitable mission. The Pietà sculptures are cast from a mold derived from Michelangelo’s original marble Pietà in Saint Peter’s Basilica, using a proprietary Carrara marble and resin blend, which is hand-finished and polished by master artisans. Indeed, this casting process ensures that, in every meaningful respect, each and every intricate detail of the masterpiece is consistent with Michelangelo’s original work-of-art — from the nuanced folds in Mary’s garments, to the muscles of Jesus’ body, to the luminous expression of Mary’s face, to the bold signature of Michelangelo that adorns the sash running across her chest, all of which can be viewed up close and from all sides.

The Art of Faith

“Beauty is a key to the mystery and a call to

  • transcendence. It is an invitation to savor life and to

dream of the future. It stirs that hidden nostalgia for God ... (and leads) to that infinite Ocean of beauty where wonder becomes awe, exhilaration, unspeakable joy. —-Pope John Paul II, Michelangelo’s Pietà is the essence of this ideal.

A lasting legacy of positive change that you can leave to your chosen community of faith. There are many causes worthy of your support, but there are few that will leave a legacy for you involving a benefit that lasts for generations to come. Each Pietà will likely be viewed by hundreds, if not thousands, of people each day, and we believe that there is simply no other image or sculpture with such power to inspire Christians and art lovers around the world to open their hearts and minds to God … indeed, this represents a type of divine inspiration that the world desperately needs. Without question, we feel the profound experience of viewing this artwork inspires positive change from within among onlookers, and motivates us to make choices that better ourselves and the world around us. Michelangelo himself may well have said it best, when he observed in one of his poems: “My eyes longing for beautiful things, together with my soul longing for salvation, have no other power to ascend to heaven than the contemplation of beautiful things.”

Prospective benefactors should also be aware of the following potential benefjts that could result from a Pietà gift: In connection with any donation, the benefactor/donor may realize certain potential tax advantages or benefjts. By way of example, in the case of a previous donation to the Oakland Cathedral in 2012 of a Pieta in bronze that had been cast and purchased during the 2005-2007 period, the Pieta’s market value had appreciated 8 times the original purchase price, and the IRS art review board ultimately allowed the donating party a tax write-ofg refmecting this increase in value. Also, the company is aware of a number

  • f similar examples involving the fjrst series of The Blessed

Virgin Mary bronze bust (again, from the Pietà), which sold for $15,000 in 2002, and was later appraised and donated for $70,000 in 2014. Disclaimer: Arte Divine does not provide tax, legal or accounting

At the age of twenty-three, Michelangelo was commissioned by the French Cardinal Jean de Bilheres to create the Pietá as his tomb monument. He traveled to the marble quarries at Carrara in central Italy to select the stone block from which he would construct his large work. The choice of this raw material was critical to the artist because he demanded a perfect integrity in the marble, and in fact envisioned the statue as already having existed within the marble, needing

  • nly to be “set free” from it. The original Pietá was sculpted

from 1498-1499, and instantly established Michelangelo as the greatest sculptor of his time. Georgio Vasari, the great art historian wrote: “It would be impossible for any craftsman or sculptor, no matter how brilliant, ever to surpass the grace or design of this work, or to try to cut and polish the marble with the skill that Michelangelo displayed. It is certainly a miracle that a formless block of stone could ever have reduced to perfection that nature is scarcely able to create in the flesh.” Of all his sculptures, the Pietá was the only one Michelangelo ever signed – in the Pietá, all of Michelangelo’s attention was focused on evoking the ideal of spiritual beauty that was so important in the time

  • f the Italian Renaissance. It is a testament to the power of his work

– as well as his abiding love of God – that half a millennium later the vision of his depiction of the compassion and serenity in Mary’s face continues to inspire us all. One of the greatest sculptures ever created, the Pietá stands as an icon for the Christian faith, bringing inspiration to the millions who visit St. Peter’s Basilica every year.
