Remembering Stuart Karabenick
A Life Well Lived
Professor Stuart Karabenick: The Person
ü A proud father of four, a grandfather of two, a son, a husband. ü A Michigander who went to Michigan for undergrad, grad, and
work
ü A vegetarian and an old hippie who cut his hair, got a suit, but
never really lost the hippie in him
ü A soft-spoken, opinionated political activist and an optimist ü A friend to so many, from such different circles ü A lover of jazz, Jazzfest, and good beer ü A man of endless curiosity, always reading, learning and teaching ü A man with a vision for a better world ü A Mensch. A person who led with kindness, humility, and wisdom
Professor Stuart Karabenick: The Scholar
- A long career at Eastern Michigan University, Professor Emeritus
status
- A Research Professor at U of M, affiliated with the Combined
Program in Education and Psychology
- Internationally renowned scholar on motivation and self-regulation
- One of the foremost experts on help-seeking behavior
- Tremendous variety of research topics:
○ Help-seeking, achievement goals, teacher identity, ethnic and religious identity, classroom environments, research methodologies, religious fundamentalism, etc.
- Scores of collaborators from all over the world
- Beloved mentor to graduate students and early-career professionals
In the Words of Stuart’s Students
“Stuart was a dedicated, supportive, inspiring, and generous PhD advisor and
- mentor. He achieved the very rare accomplishment of having both breadth and
depth—in his knowledge, his expertise in different psychological and educational areas, his mentoring, his writing, his connections to others, and in his life interests. Stuart will be greatly missed.” --Kara Makara “Stuart was epistemologically courageous, always encouraging us to ask difficult conceptual and methodological questions. He was never afraid to earnestly confront the limitations of our understanding in educational and psychological research.” --Jeffrey Albrecht “Stuart was a wonderful mentor and person who warmly welcomed everyone he met to share a drink, meal, conversation, music, and their passion. His collegial approach, love of learning, and boundless intellectual engagement provide a model for so many of us.” --Melissa Gilbert

Proposed Bylaw Change
Proposed Bylaw Change
Suggested By-Law Amendment: Career Achievement Committee Current Article VII. Committees Section 5: The Edward Lee Thorndike Award Committee shall consist of six Fellows of the Division, serving three-year terms. Current - Edited Article VII. Committees Section 5: The Edward Lee Thorndike Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education Committee shall consist of six Fellows of the Division, serving three-year terms. Suggested Amendment Article VII. Committees Section 5: The Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education Committee shall consist of six Fellows of the Division, serving three-year terms.
Reason for Proposed Change
In October of 2019 a Division Member asked me (Helenrose Fives) why we continued to give the E.L. Thorndike Award given concerns about his beliefs. The EC, Thorndike Committee, and I investigated and reflected
- n this query. The EC came to the conclusion that the award
should be renamed. The reason for this change is that E.L. Thorndike adhered to and promoted eugenics.
Process
- 1. All members and fellows of the division are eligible to vote.
- 2. A Bylaw change requires ⅔ approval of votes.
- 3. In the next few weeks* voting members will receive an
email explaining the change and rationale for the change with a link to cast their vote.
- 4. Voting will remain open for 30 days.
*We are required to send paper ballots to any voting members who do not have an email on file (n=69). This will be the hold up as APA would typically do this for a small fee; but with COVID they cannot. We are working on how to best do this.

Treasurer Comments & Recommendations
- Our net income in 2019 was $46,422.50
- Royalties from Educational Psychologist continue to be the greatest source
- f income, but also the largest proportion of expenses.
- Our income was higher than in the past, in part due to return on
investments and higher than expected royalties.
- Assets to date (as of 5/31/2020) – up from same point last year
- $572,982.02 in our checking account
- $261,637.86 in our Merrill Lynch money market account
- $622,456.89 in our TIAA account
- ($115,239.17 in Advances and Prepaids)
- That means our net assets plus total liabilities amount to $1,572,314.94
- Please welcome our new Treasurer – Jonathan Hilpert!
