  3. 2 Teeth Today we are going to look a our teeth in more detail. We have already learnt that we use them when we eat, and that they tear and chew our food to make it easier to travel around the rest of the digestive system. Did you know? Adults have 32 teeth whilst children only have 20!

  4. 3 Mini Task Grab a mirror and see if you can count how many teeth you have! What could be the reason that you have more than 20 teeth?

  5. 4 Different Teeth Our teeth are similar to our digestive system. The digestive system has lots of organs which each have a specific job. We have different types of teeth in our mouths which all have different jobs. They look different as they are shaped to do their specific job.

  6. 5 Incisors Incisors We have 8 incisors. 4 on the top jaw and 4 on the bottom jaw. They are flat and are sometimes described as a spade shape. These are the teeth we usually use first when eating. They are used for biting and cutting food . incisor Incisors

  7. 6 Canines Canines We then use our canines. We have 4 canines. 2 on the top jaw and 2 on the bottom jaw. Our canines are pointy and sometimes referred to as ‘fangs’. We use our canines to tear and rip our food . canine Canines

  8. 7 Premolars Premolars We have 8 premolars. 4 on the top jaw and 4 on the bottom. They are next to our canines. Our premolars are small and have a flat top. They hold and crush our food . premolar Premolars

  9. 8 Molars Molars We have 8 molars. 4 on the top jaw and 4 on the bottom. The molars towards the back of our mouths. They are our largest teeth and have a flat top. They are used to grind out food before we swallow it. molar Molars

  10. 9 Wisdom Wisdom When we get older, most of us will grow our wisdom teeth. We have 4 wisdom teeth. Our wisdom teeth are basically an extra molar so help with grinding our food. Scientists believe our ancestors used to eat a lot of tougher food, such as leaves and nuts, which needed grinding more. We don’t necessarily have a need for our wisdom teeth nowadays and lots of people have them removed as our mouths aren’t big enough to house them! Wisdom

  11. 10 Independent Activity Now, we are going to see what you have learnt! On your worksheets, you need to label the different teeth we have. Then describe each of their functions. New word alert! Function – synonym for job or what it does. E.g. A heart’s function is to pump blood around the body.
