NCI Student Support and Recreation Service  The role of the service is to encourage all students to get actively involved in extra-curricular activities, with Clubs and Societies at the forefront of student life on campus. It is the aspiration of the service to encourage involvement in sport and recreation through the provision of diverse opportunities that maximise participation levels and creates a well-rounded student experience.

Why – Research Introduction  The research undertaken in an Irish context focuses on reports that have been presented through member affiliation with national sports and societies associations and higher education institutional networking conferences. The studies published generally focus on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of student participation levels and to date the author has not found any fact based research linking participation levels and academic performance .

  5. How – Research Methodology  Individual meetings with Presidents from 10 Clubs and 14 Societies in 2 nd semester of 2012  Student membership identified through online and sign up day recruitment  Each student allocated an activity category based on their level of participation or involvement in the activities organised or planned by the committee  Exam broadsheets from the 2011-12 academic year were exported from QUERCUS – the internal student administration system
