  1. An Introduction to SCEPTREplus Joe Martin

  2. Content • SCEPTREplus • Relevance to Carrot and Onion Growers • Weed control Trials • Knowledge Exchange • Priorities for Year 2

  3. To deliver applied research on high priority disease, pest and weed problems in fresh produce and ornamental crops in order to support approval of products and devise and develop IPM programmes • Consortium approach • Financial contributions from Agchem / Product Manufacturers / Producers • In kind contributions • Industry Steering groups with representatives from different sectors • Embedded Knowledge Exchange • Flexible approach

  4. 4 year £1.4m AHDB 134 products being programme: investment evaluated 2017-2021 • 104 conventional products • 11 biologicals 18 on priority crop • 8 biopesticides protection problems in • 12 botanicals 18 trials year 1: • 8 weed trials • 6 pest trials Crop protection • 4 disease trials companies have contributed financially 3 or in-kind Model crop trial approach with 20 6 different targets: onion thrips; aphids; EAMU applications western flower thrips; downy different test crops already submitted mildew; bacterial diseases and selected to CRD Pythium root rot

  5. Year 1 Targets

  6. Carrots Weed control in Carrots and Parsnips Aphids Relevance for Carrot and Onion Growers Onions Downy mildew (model Crop) Onion thrips on Leeks

  7. Carrot and parsnip herbicide trials • 4 sites • Nottinghamshire and Suffolk • Sandy loam soils • Carrot and parsnip trial at each site • 12 pre-emergence treatments in Carrots on 21 June- Notts combination with pendimethalin + clomazone (carrot) or pendimethalin + metamitron (parsnip) • 6 post-emergence test treatments applied after a standard pre-em • 3 replicates • Carrots drilled late May Parsnips on 27 July - Suffolk • Parsnips drilled early May

  8. What was done, and what happened when • Spray timings • Pre-emergence – within 5 days of drilling • Post-emergence – at 1-2 true leaf, and again at 3-4 true leaves • Assessed weed levels and crop safety • At each post-emergence spray application • 2, 4 and 8 weeks after the final post-em application • Root sample Untreated 1m 2 area per plot • Suffolk • Counted, weighed and graded Untreated • At spray application, conditions in Notts were wetter than the Suffolk Suffolk sites • Regional differences in crop safety • Weed levels in untreated, high in parsnip, low in carrot but useful crop safety data from carrots

  9. Crop effects After Gamit applied once at 0.1 L/ha post-emergence • Pre-emergence treatments all applied with Stomp Aqua + (clomazone or metamitron) • Post-emergence all applied after Stomp Aqua + AHDB9947 (+ clomazone or metamitron) • All post-emergence treatments checked both the parsnip and carrot crops when assessed 2 weeks after application, but effects appear to be transient and most had recovered to acceptable based on foliar appearance at 8 weeks after application Yellow spotting after AHDB9997 pre-em • Some pre-emergence treatments also checked crops, more so in Notts where rainfall was more intense around applications, again effects appeared transient Scorch after AHDB9997 post- em • Root data still to be analysed – Final piece!
