  10. Early In Inspection Procedures Maintenance Level of Inspections – Visual inspections for defects performed annually – SI&A submitted annually Catastrophic Inspections – Performed every 5 years • Met NBI standard for Fracture Critical Members Underwater Inspections – Performed every 5 years • Met NBI standard for Underwater Inspections 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

  11. Early In Inspection Procedures Defect Oriented Documentation – Notes only indicated what was wrong – Assumed that if it was not noted, it was inspected and found acceptable 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

  12. Early In Inspection Procedures • Compiled in volumes by facility. • Some electronic information saved on network. 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

  14. Evaluation of th the Syste tem MDTA Discussed New Direction and Improvements to Program. – Considered comparable owners’ procedures. – Participated in peer reviews. – Need to be Condition Based verses Defect Based. – Need to have “stand alone” inspection reports. – Need to contain greater detail and be more descriptive. – Opportunity to automate the documentation. – Opportunity to directly link findings with repairs. 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

  15. Evaluation of th the Syste tem Results: Key Outcomes – Increase funding for inspections to obtain the desired Hands On Inspection in lieu of a Maintenance Inspection. – Establish defined inspection procedures and reporting. • Span by span reporting; not just overall bridge – Develop an Inspection Manual to document procedures and promote consistency. – Develop a Data Management System to record and manipulate findings data. • Have the ability to track defects from original finding to repair and to verified completion. – Get priority findings addressed rapidly. 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

For signature structures, can be up to 1500 pages. – Interim • Viewed as a supplement or follow-up to the previous biennial inspection report. • Can be as small as 4 pages for a workhorse bridge 2012 MdQI Conference Quality Transportation- A Hybrid Approach

  21.
