Coast Care

  • Sand dunes are the backbone of our beaches,

they buffer between the land and the sea.

  • Healthy dunes are wide, gently sloping and have

many dune plants to help anchor them

  • BOP Regional Council in partnership with

WBOPDC fund the work to to protect, enhance and restore the our dune systems

  • At Pukehina we are planting native dune

species, managing dune access, controlling weeds and animals

  • Native sand binding plants are spinifex and

pingao

  • Order your plants for May/June planting time J

Coast Care continued…

  • Previous Committee work established a resource consent through Bay of

Plenty Regional Council to complete remedial works in the coastal zone in the event of significant erosion.

  • Following a report commissioned by Jim Dahm in December 2018 a pushup

was completed in May 2019, for properties 205-231 (identified as most at risk in the report)

  • The process included weed and rubbish removal, spraying, and planting
  • Some sand was lost at the toe of the dune initially but the plants are thriving

and the sand dunes are looking good.

  • Cost of works were $27,945
  • We will continue to work with Coast Care BOP and Jim in assessing other

parts of the beach identified in the report.

between the surf club and Ororoa Reserve in particular

  • We are working with WBOPDC consultant Geoff Canham, DOC and

BOPRC to secure approx. $30,000 for remedial works from the surf club to 50m south of the boat ramp initially, including the rock walls from 654 - 662.

together to help restore the mauri of this special place (e.g. planting days)
