Projects and Initiatives in AgGateway
- General Definition of a Project
- A temporary endeavor undertaken to create or significantly improve a
unique product or service that addresses a specific business need and provides specific deliverables.
- Projects in AgGateway
- An initiative that is defined and chartered by one or more Industry
Segment Councils,
- funded by the participants from those councils,
- has a goal of improving a specific area of business in which the project
participants conduct business.
- Usually accomplished by adapting, adopting, or creating an industry
standard(s) that utilize information and communication technologies.
- We refer to these types of projects as “Council Projects” or “AgGateway
sponsored projects”.
5
Projects and Initiatives in AgGateway
- AgGateway initiatives
- “Projects” that the organization itself takes on to increase the value of
AgGateway to its members in general.
- Chartered and initiated by the board of directors, management team, or
- ne of the standing committees
- Funded by the AgGateway general fund or a special fund created for the
purpose of improving an AgGateway asset or service.
- Examples of council projects are:
- CNC II
- SC II
- SPADE
- PAIL
- Examples of AgGateway initiatives are:

Standardized Precision Ag Data Exchange (SPADE)
Scope:
- The Seeding Planting Operation
- ISO-11783 parts 10 and 11
- Identify gaps between data requirements and what 11783 supports
- Develop guidelines for use, including addressing gaps, of ISO-
11783 part 10/11 for machine-to-FMIS data exchange
- Provide input to ISO regarding the gaps and how we suggest
addressing them
- Define reference data required to implement/document a
production practice as defined by the scope expressed in the seeding (planting) use cases.
18
SPADE – Scope Continued
- AGIIS
- Define the role of the AGIIS database as it relates to seeding use
cases.
- Identify gaps between requirements and the data AGIIS provides as
defined by the role (point 3.1.)
- AgGateway Clearinghouse Concept (API Examples)
- Proof of Concept
- Farming Practice Templates for Compliance Reporting - Define
scope more granularly
- USDA NRCS - Define scope more granularly (e.g., pulling data
from NRCS vs pushing data to them)
- Machine-to-FMIS data exchange
- FMIS-to-FMIS data exchange
19
Standardized Precision Ag Data Exchange (SPADE)
- Objectives:
- Understand AgGateway’s standards and guidelines development process.
Propose any changes required to meet precision agriculture requirements. This would include:
- Standards/Guidelines Definition: Identify the process for defining standards
- Council Review: Identify mechanics for distribution, review and approval of
standards within the PAC.
- Submission Process: Identify the process to finalize recommendations for
submission into AgGateway formalized (AgExchange - AgE) accepted standards.
- AgGateway Member Review Process: Identify the AgGateway cross council
review/approval process
- Publication: Identify the process to publish online guidelines to the
AgGateway community
20
SPADE (objectives continued)
- Outline process of defining standards using the seeding use case
example
- Define the guidelines for implementing ISO-11783 (part 10 and 11)
including required and optional elements.
- Implement templates for use by FMIS to define a practice or
compliance reporting requirement.
- Utilize the Ag Industry Information System (AGIIS) directory for the
entity identifiers and product identifiers.
- Implementation by at least one major input manufacturer and one
equipment manufacturer with no limit on the number of producers.
- Document the standards-development process experience in the
Seeding Use Case
- Final report to PAC with production demonstration of Seeding Use
Case
21
SPADE (objectives continued)
- Other Field Operations
- Define the use cases for data exchange messages for FMIS

Precision Ag Irrigation (PAIL)
Project Objectives:
- Enable communication by providing a common set of data standards.
These standards will represent weather, soil moisture and other relevant data, currently stored in a variety of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) formats, in an industry-wide format that can be used by irrigation data analysis and prescription programs.
- Enable more efficient, easier-to-use solutions for growers, and the
proposed standards will provide for extensibility for future use cases. Progress to date:
- Working on use cases for inbound data, field operations data, and
historical data. The project is meeting this week to continue that work.

Crop Protection Canada Connectivity (CPCC)
- Project Sponsoring Council: Crop Protection Council
- Start and End Dates: September 2013 – December 2015
- Project Objectives:
- Improve the supply chain by implementing the exchange of selected XML-
based messages that support the order-to-invoice business process. This goal will be achieved by 4Q2015 as evidenced by the exchange of selected messages between 2 major distributors (~10-20% of the Canadian crop protection (CP) sales) and 4 manufacturers (at least 3 with ~10-20% each of the CP business) in a production environment.
- 50% of all participants will have connectivity with at least one trading partner
by 4Q2014.
