  3. 12/6/17 Need for understanding of Second Language Learning • Teachers sometimes think all students need to be on the “same playing field” when it comes to assessment and that students need to be compared to one another • ELLs need teachers who understand the second language acquisition process – It take approximately 2-3 years for English oral proficiency – It takes approximately 7-10 years for academic proficiency equivalent to that of mainstreamed monolingual students Smith, L (2013-2014) 7 Instruction and Assessment • Just as we are mandated to make instruction comprehensible for ELLs so we are required to make assessment comprehensible. • As language develops, accommodations for learning and assessment should decrease.
