Need for understanding of Second Language Learning

  • Teachers sometimes think all students need

to be on the “same playing field” when it comes to assessment and that students need to be compared to one another

  • ELLs need teachers who understand the

second language acquisition process

– It take approximately 2-3 years for English oral proficiency – It takes approximately 7-10 years for academic proficiency equivalent to that of mainstreamed monolingual students

  • Just as we are mandated to make

instruction comprehensible for ELLs so we are required to make assessment comprehensible.

  • As language develops,

accommodations for learning and assessment should decrease.

Tier Placement

Must continue to update Tier for new/incoming students. No additional updating is required for current students.

DEUSS Date

The DEUSS date (Date Entered a United States School) for ELLs from Puerto Rico will be the first day of school in any of the 50 states

  • r District of
  • Columbia. If a

student already has a DEUSS, this date is not changed.

Immigrant Status

Students from Puerto Rico are not identified as immigrants, so districts will report “N” for immigrant status.

ELL entry date

The ELL entry date will be the date they are entered into your (or Florida) ESOL program and weighted FTE 130 can be claimed.
