A New Lease on Life

  • In 2009, Attorney General McDonnell awarded $1 million to

VHCF as a challenge grant.

  • VHCF, VCHA, VAFC, VACSB jointly issued an RFP and reviewed

proposals.

  • To qualify for funding , proposals had to:
  • Demonstrate collaboration between a free clinic or

community health center, and a community service board;

  • Provide basic mental health services to health safety net

patients; and/or

  • Provide primary medical care to community service board

consumers with serious mental illness (SMI).

A New Lease on Life Grantees

  • In December 2009, VHCF awarded $2 million dollars (over

three years) to nine collaboratives made up of 13 CSBs, 7 free clinics, and 6 community health centers.

  • All are receiving funding to provide basic mental

health services to health safety net patients

  • Two are receiving funding to also provide primary

medical care to CSB consumers

  • Two are providing primary care to CSB consumers

without ANLOL funding support

18 providers (10.32 FTE) : 5 LCSW (2 FTE) 5 Psychiatrists (.57 FTE) 2 MSW (1.75 FTE) 2 Physicians (.75 FTE) 1 Psychologist (1 FTE) 1 Psych Nurse Practitioner (.5 FTE) 1 Family Nurse Practitioner (.5 FTE) 1 Nurse (.75 FTE)

  • Rx medicines. Most are free via brandname pharmaceutical

companies’ Patient Assistance Programs.

Other Lessons Learned

  • Treatment of basic mental illnesses (depression, anxiety)

delivers a huge return on limited dollars invested.

  • Integration of care works well and neutralizes mental health

stigma.

  • Successful integration of services requires training, adjustment
  • f some operational protocols, and focus.
  • Integration in the delivery of mental health and primary

medical services is the way of the future.
