What is small?

According to IWA, treatment systems serving population equivalent (PE) lower than 2000 are small scale Small means small in size, not in number! In Germany there are 1.8 million plants with size <50 PE despite the fact that less that 4% of the population treat their wastewater in small-scale sewage facilities US EPA ‘In the U.S., there are 152,002 operational public water systems (PWS). Of these, 97% (147,657) are considered ‘small systems’ under the Safe Drinking Water Act, meaning they serve 10,000 or fewer people.’
