What is small? According to IWA, treatment systems serving population equivalent (PE) lower than 2000 are small scale Small means small in size, not in number! In Germany there are 1.8 million plants with size <50 PE despite the fact that less that 4% of the population treat their wastewater in small-scale sewage facilities US EPA ‘ In the U.S., there are 152,002 operational public water systems (PWS).
