What is FDLRS?

• The Florida Diagnostic & Learning

Resources System (FDLRS) provides diagnostic, instructional, and technology support services to district exceptional education programs and families of students with disabilities. Service centers include 19 centers that directly serve school districts in the areas of Child Find, Parent Services, Human Resource Development (HRD), and Technology. www.fdlrs.org

Number Sense & Computation Using Number Cubes

PreK-K: Count total dots. Grades 1-3: Add dots using 2 or more cubes. Grades 4-6: Multiply dots of 2 cubes.

• 2. Always be encouraging and never tell kids they

are wrong when they are working on math problems.

• Instead find the logic in their thinking – there is

always some logic to what they say.

What is Subitizing?

Subitizing is “instantly seeing how many.” Fundamental skill in the development of students’ understanding of number (Baroody 1987)

The spatial arrangement of sets influences how difficult they are to subitize. Helps draw student attention to groups and patterns.

Subitizing for Struggling Learners

Research shows that the majority of struggling leaners do not have this skill. Do not take for granted that they have this skill - even students in intermediate grades. Deficiencies in this area need to addressed in order for the student to develop proper number sense.
