Since we could not clearly see the target region in the past, we needed to use very large areas; accordingly, radiotherapy was delivered to a larger area in order to treat the tumor or in other words, all patients required to wear XL shields. Since conebeam CT feature of the Elekta Versa HD device clearly visualizes the region that we deliver radiation at daily intervals, we can, now, offer personalized, tailored or “haute couture” treatment for all patients. This treatment, also known as IGRT, enables delivering high doses to the tumor, while the intact tissue is provided with maximum protection.

Now, Radiotherapy Takes Shorter Time

As you already know, radiotherapy lasts for 5 to 8 weeks, but Elekta HD Versa and similar devices with superior technology offers safe therapies that last 3 or 5 days. In selected patients with prostate cancer, a 5-day treatment achieves all outcomes of a 8-week treatment and accordingly, patient needs shorter stay in hospital before daily routines are engaged. The high-dose radiotherapy delivered in one day manages the pain rapidly in cerebral (brain) and spinal (vertebra) metastases, while surrounding tissue and spinal cord are not harmed; in addition, healthy brain tissues are conserved.

Non-operative Treatment with Radiotherapy

For patients with early stage lung cancers who cannot be operated due to a reason whatsoever, the tumor can be treated with a success rate close to that of surgery by delivering very high dose of radiation only to the tumor, colloquially known as “pinpoint shooting”, using radio- surgery method with Electa Versa HD for 1 to 3 days. Accordingly, patients with lung cancer, who were deemed inoperable or incurable in the past, are no more desperate; outcomes are very close to that of surgery cases.
