Planning and Course description guide and Registration Worksheet ○ The guide will give you information on the Rockford High School graduation requirements and course descriptions. ○ Worksheet ○ A tool for you when completing your online registration. ○ Please return a signed copy to the guidance office by Friday February 3, 2017. ○

  7. Transcript • Review it carefully • Check to make sure that you do not have any incompletes. • GPA is cumulative (builds as you go up each year). • If you are new to Rockford, please plan to come into guidance to review your transcript.

New Courses for 2017-2018 (pending board approval) ○ Agriculture New Courses ○ Introduction to Horticulture ○ Horticulture is designed to give students a background in horticultural science and the many career opportunities in the nursery, garden, turf and landscape industries. It addresses the biology and genetics involved in the production, processing and marketing of horticulture plants and productions. Increased interest in the quality of the environment, conservation, and restoration projects are stimulating growth in the industry. Quality nursery and landscape operations require skilled, educated employees. Classroom and laboratory content will be enhancing by utilizing appropriate equipment and technology. ○ Food Science ○ Food Science is designed to reinforce and enhance the student’s knowledge of scientific principles and processes through the study of foods and nutrition. An in-depth understanding of science as it applies to foods will assist students with interest in career and technical education, to understand the food industry as well as food preparation in their daily lives. Whenever possible, students should be involved in hands-on laboratory activities which verify the scientific concepts presented.

  12. New Courses for 2017-2018 (pending board approval) ○ Art New Courses ○ Media Art Design ○ Students will be learning to use elements and tools of current and emerging technologies to create. Students experience a variety of approaches and to design including using media of Adobe Creative product software. Photography, digital design, and video may be explored. In this class students consider how the characteristics of themes in history and cultural context of story and narrative contribute to the creation of media expressions. Students will capture images and explore multi-media approaches to visual communication. Original expression of feeling, mood, and content through projects of their own choice will help develop their personal vision as student artists. Students read and respond to printed media, and to criteria- elements such as image, space, and time,as they combine to create meaning. The creative process of using multiple sources to create original pieces of media art is practiced. ○ AP STUDIO ART: 2D DESIGN (Pending College Board Approval) ○ The AP course is a cooperative endeavor that assists high school students in completion of college level course work. This course is foremost centered in the media arts of black and white film photography and digitally edited photographs. Highly motivated students will integrate tools, materials, and techniques to create a portfolio of original photographs. The media uses properties of light, chemistry, electronics and optics. STEM learning continues here while preparing students for success in the creative economy. Design thinking, discussion and critiques help students revise creative work based on artistic intent and multiple sources of feedback.

  13. New Courses for 2017-2018 (pending board approval) ○ Art New Courses ○ PAINTING STUDIO ○ Each student is unique and it takes time to explore meaning in in a complex world. Painting studio is intended to engage students in the process and practice of painting while experimenting with hands-on learning. Take this class once or multiple times to create original paintings in watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media techniques. Confident that each student will demonstrate genuine effort in the process of worthwhile exploration of idea and themes in personal, cultural, and social life. The mind is open to contemplation while engaged in the work of painting using the creative process. Students will contract to create and use a rubric for earning a grade. Students will study the origins and development of the Holocausts and its political, cultural, economic, and social implications through the lens of different writers. ○ New Names for English Courses ○ British Literature (Formerly English 12) ○ Honors American Literature (Formerly AP Lit & Comp) ○ Honors US History (Formerly AP US History)
