IMPORTANT: This year, all writers should:

Review their administrative unit’s checklist and strategic plan prior to writing. Conduct the assessment during the 2017-18 academic year. Analyze and report on assessment results during 2018 program review

What is an Administrative Unit Outcome?

Administrative Unit Outcomes (AUOs) refer to what a “client” (consumer, user, etc.) will understand, experience, or obtain as a result of a specific service.

SLO verses AUO?

Does the objective pertain to learning? If it pertains to learning, it’s probably best addressed by an SLO. Does the objective relate to a service? If it pertains to a service and does not specify learning that is expected to occur, an AUO may be a more appropriate means of assessment.

SLO Example

Example of an SLO for an orientation workshop: Upon completion of the workshop, students will be able to identify at least one campus resource they can use to assist them in achieving their academic and/or career goal. How could you assess this SLO? What is an acceptable target (% of clients that meet SLO)?

AUO Example

Example of an AUO for Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) Unit: Internal and external clients are satisfied with the outcomes of their research requests. How could you assess this AUO? What is an acceptable target (% of clients that meet AUO)?

Who’s in the driver’s seat?

You are It is important to recognize that your department (faculty, managers and classified staff) decides how your AUOs are designed, developed and how they are assessed.

Map your AUOs and SLOs

Mapping is aligning AUOs /SLOs to strategic planning goals. 1. Identify which strategic goal(s) your AUO/SLO corresponds to, and align your AUO or SLO to that goal. 2. Indicate that strategic goal in parenthesis next to your AUO/SLO, or in a table format (see OIE example).
