Methodology

  • Survey administration: February of 2016
  • Sampling strategy: schools were selected to generate

statistically representative state-level and county-level estimates

  • Students surveyed in all 67 Florida counties
  • Final sample size was 65,776 across grades 6 through

12

  • The margin of error is less than 1.0 percentage point

for M.S. and H.S. prevalence rates

3

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Survey Validation

  • ATOD exaggeration—1,085
  • Antisocial behavior exaggeration—500
  • Inconsistency—1,249
  • Fictitious drug—1,756
  • No response for more than 75% of the survey

questions—1,100 3,391 respondents (4.9%) identified and eliminated by

  • ne or more of five validation tests:

5

ATOD Prevalence Rate Comparisons

  • Lifetime prevalence—one or more

uses in student’s lifetime

 Indicates percentage of students who have tried or experimented

  • Past-30-day prevalence—one or more

uses in past 30 days

 Indicates percentage of students who are current users

Key Long-T erm Finding #1

  • Reduced alcohol use
  • Higher-risk alcohol use also down
  • Reduced cigarette use
  • Early initiation becoming less

common

slide-11

11

Changes Have Been:

  • Dramatic

 Falling by nearly half or more than half for most indicators

  • Continuous

 Reductions in the majority of survey years, trend line continuing down

  • Widespread

 Occurring across demographic groups
