  4. Acknowledgements NUEPA has been involved in strengthening educational management information system for more than a decade. Initially the mandate was to develop a com- puterised information system for Primary level of education but was confjned only to DPEP districts/states. While launching Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in 2001, not only was the scope of DISE extended to the entire elementary level of education but its coverage was also expanded from the DPEP districts to the entire country. In 2005-06, all the districts were covered under DISE for the fjrst time. With The Right to Education Act in 2009, the Data Capture Format of DISE was further modifjed. When Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) was launched, NUEPA extended coverage of DISE from the Elementary to Secondary and Higher Secondary levels of education and developed on-line application in 2007-08. During 2012-13, the scop of DISE was further extended to cover Secondory & Higher Secondary schools: since then it is known as Unifjed-DISE (U-DISE). Secondary Education in India, Graphic Presentation: 2014-15 is based on data collected during U-DISE 2014-15. The web-enabled document is based on the data received from as many as 1.52 million schools spread over 680 districts across 36 States & UTs. A study of this magnitude cannot be completed without the active involvement and participation of the EMIS professionals at the national and sub-national levels. I am thankful to all the State Project Directors of SSA and RMSA, the state level EMIS Coordinators and district level Programmers and Data Entry Operators for supply of data. I take this opportunity to thank UNICEF, Delhi, in particular Mr. Begur Ramachandra Rao (Education Specialist) for consistently supporting EMIS activities at NUEPA since the inception of DISE. I would also like to thank Dr. Subhash C. Khuntia Secretary, Ms. Rina Ray, Additional Secretary, Shri Maneesh Garg, Joint Secretary and Director, Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, who played a crucial role in facilitating the implementation of U-DISE in various states. I am thankful to Vice-Chancellor, NUEPA, for consistent encouragement and guidance. The contribution of Mr. Naveen Bhatia, Systems Analyst, NUEPA in database management and software development, is gratefully acknowledged. I am thankful to DISE project team at NUEPA especially Ms. Aparna Mookerjee, Mr Arun Joshi and Mr Jay Prakash, for timely bringing out the publication. I hope that this publication will be of value to education planners, policy formulators and researchers. Suggestions for improvement are most welcome. Arun C. Mehta March 2016 arunmenta@nuepa.org

  5. Disclaimer Raw data presented in the document or used for calculating indicators are essentially based on data provided by the States and UTs through annual data collection (as on 30th September 2014). NUEPA is committed to provide professional and software support to all States and UTs as well as for dissemination and analysis of data as it is provided by the individual States and UTs. In no way, NUEPA is involved in data collection as such and therefore the accuracy and truthfulness of the data rest with the States/UTs. The State Project Directors have certifjed that data is free from errors and inconsistencies and hence may be merged into the national database maintained at NUEPA, New Delhi.
