VITAMIN D SUPPORT

In the 1950s, after the Second World War, the government issued a dose of cod liver oil to children every day to supplement their diets with a good source of vitamin D. Sixty years later and Vitamin D deficiency is still a big concern in the UK. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, muscle function and the function of the immune system - and the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Polluted environments, less light and spending more time indoors are major factors in Vitamin D deficiency. This can cause tiredness, aches and a general sense of feeling down in the dumps and unwell, especially throughout the cold, wet, darker months.

Babies from birth to 1 year of age who are being breased should be given a daily supplement containing 8.5 to 10 micrograms (µg) of vitamin D to make sure they get

• enough. This is whether or not you're taking a supplement containing vitamin D

yourself. Children aged 5 - 18 years old and adults (including pregnant and breaseeding women) should take a daily supplement containing 10µg of vitamin D in the autumn and winter. Babies fed infant formula shouldn't be given a vitamin D supplement if they're having more than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day, because infant formula is forfied with vitamin D and other nutrients. Children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10µg of vitamin D. Vitamin D is measured in internaonal units (IU).
