1 HYTHE AQUA PRESENTATION EVENING 2015  A very big welcome to Hythe Aqua’s 39th annual awards evening. Welcome to you all and thank you for attending our awards evening We are here tonight to celebrate another successful Hythe Aqua year and to share in the success of all the prize-winners. Tonight we will be presenting the medals won in the Championships and also presenting the annual awards for all the other sections of the club. . All sections of the club have performed well this year with club records being broken, more swimmers qualifying at higher levels, excellent Masters and Open Water achievements, continued success at high levels for both synchro and water polo. We are starting with the learn to swim scheme awards. We have a very successful learn to swim scheme that provides the majority of our competitive swimmers. The scheme is nationally recognised and has received Swim21/Clubmark recognition. The scheme is totally run by hardworking qualified volunteers, who give up many hours to teach children to swim Teaching Group Merit Awards The teaching section regularly produces very good competitive members for the various sections of the club and is a major asset to the club. The Swimming Teachers also recognise that their pupils work very hard as they develop them from the learner pool, improving their skills until they pass onto the competitive sections of the club. The teachers have awarded Merit Awards to the following for their commitment and interest shown in swimming. Please come forward: Herbie Stewart, Gemma and Chloe Malcolm, Ellen Rose, Hannah Boniface and Emma Howes-Lawrence. Moving on now to the competitive swimming age group awards. Our competitive swimmers have had a very successful season, with qualifiers at all levels. We have had

  • ne of our best ever years at East Invicta and Kent level as part of the Shepway Club
  • initiative. We have an excellent and growing coaching team under the direction of our

Head Swimming Coach Tim Wiseman, who all spend many hours, coaching, preparing

  • sessions. We also have an excellent and also growing poolside gala team led by Kim and

Cheryl well done to them all. Tim has asked me to pass on his thanks; all the parents that support, help, cheer, drop

  • ff, pick up etc, Its not easy with so many other options available but I am sure the

swimmers appreciate the efforts all their families make. Special thanks from me to Kim, Gavin, Paul, Kevin, Helen, Mick for their poolside skills. We have had a successful year at East Invicta’s. Kent’s, Kent Junior League and the Arena League which are all great competitions but to get entry times I appreciate that the endless stream of open events are draining on funds and energy and we would love to get back to club galas allowing all to race. Also a big thanks to all our swimmers who actually make coaching enjoyable – you are not a bad bunch. Before we start the presentations I want to take an opportunity to say thank you to a few squad swimmers. There are a lot of competitive swimming competitions during the year and squad members get many calls to swim for the club. The following swimmers

The juniors won the Under 2002 age group at the Kent Water Polo festival in June with the B team coming 3rd We currently we have 9 players, boys and girls training with South East Region Squads hoping to gain selection for teams later in the year and in 2016. Toby Masray is in the Kent squad for the 2002/u mixed team against stiff competition from very strong players from Beckenham hoping to be selected for the final 13. Jess Helliwell and Grace Walker have already represented SE region this year and Jess attended GB trails for her age group recently. Grace Walker represented GB in a tournament in Germany in March where she scored her first international goal but was unlucky not to make the final 13 player squad for the European Games in Baku Azerbaijan in June. Senior Polo has undergone some changes this year with numbers dropping as players moved to University or went into retirement completely. Other polo clubs are also experiencing a drop in senior players and to ensure a good standard of teams representing Shepway, Folkestone and Hythe work together to enter the Kent League as we do in swimming gala’s. The section is always keen to recruit new members both in Junior and Senior so if you are interested please have a chat to Kim or Jamie. We have some posters advertising the section so if anyone could display one in their work place please let us know. Thank you to our loyal band of helpers and coaches- Jim Burch, Helen Oakes, Ellie Burch, Grace Walker Jamie Bailey and Marc Stephenson and those parents who help Sundays get goals in and out, it is much appreciated The first water polo awards are: JUNIOR WATER POLO MERIT AWARDS:- Libby Macarthur Matthew Holman William Cavanagh  Most Improved Junior –Rachel Harding  Junior Player – Jessica Helliwell  The next award - Ladies Player – Ellie Burch  Most Deserving Player - Jacob Burden  Senior Player of the Year – Jamie Leppard  The final polo award - Senior Men’s Player’s Player – Ben Walker

6 Synchronised Swimming Section Moving onto Synchro Swimming, our synchro Coach Erica has asked me to say a few words

  • n her behalf.

2015 is far from over for the Synchro Section, with our County Championships coming up this weekend, and the National Age Groups still to come in December. We did finish 2014 on a high, with Hythe Aqua winning the Top Club in Kent award, and the 19&Under Senior squad taking a respectable 6th place from a large field of competitors at the National Age

  • Groups. To celebrate, we took part in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year #Big Thank

You in conjunction with Join In UK. 2015 started with the novice squads taking part in the South East and Reading Novice events, winning a Silver medal in the 12&U combination team event with their Muppets themed

  • routine. The Senior Squad took a Silver medal in the South East Recreational event, and there

have been plenty of skill level exam passes across the age groups, with special mentions to the 5 girls that have qualified for the competitive National Age Groups in December, Brianne Begley, Freya Kennedy Harper, Lara Porteous, Suzannah Turner and Allana Winstanley. Suzannah Turner also deserves a mention for qualifying for the South East Development squad and travelling to Spain for a week long training camp in May. Synchro could not survive without our wonderful team of volunteers, and we would like to thank all those who give up their time to coach poolside act as volunteers and sew sequins all year round. Many thanks also to the committee for their continued support for our section as we continue to grow. Synchro Awards Merit Awards – Suzannah Turner, Allana Winstanley,Maddie Pettit, Emily Lennon Newcomer of the Year – Lea Bibaud Coster Attendance – Susannah Turner ( Laura B Trophy – Ellie Sturgess ( Performer of the Year – Amy Bondzio Swimmer of the Year – Sandra Vroeman Most Improved. – Lexie Foord Contribution to the Club Award – Julie Winstanley Swimming Special Awards It is recognised that many squad swimmers do not win medals and sometimes do not receive the success that their hard work deserves. They are sometimes required to swim out of age at galas and competitions and never complain! They may be in a tough age group where there is lots of competition for gala places and so although talented swimmers they rarely get to

  • compete. The Club Coach has therefore awarded Merit Awards to the following: Can they

please come forward; Junior Squad Merit Awards: Buddy Wiseman, Harry Oakes, Saphia Streek and Megan Hadaway – East Invicta and East Kent Swimming Championships Winners Trophies for 2015

7 Highest point scorer at the recent East Invicta Chaminonships – Amelia Priestley with a fantastic 26 points scored for Shepway Highest point scorer of the opposite sex with 7 points was – Leon Santer Well done to all our competitors that qualified for and swam in the East Invicta championships The Kent Trophy awarded to the clubs highest point scorer at the Kent Championships. As many of you know it is hard to qualify for Kent’s and even harder to compete against all the Kent and some south London clubs, this year the Kent Trophy is awarded to:- Grace Walker SE Region Trophy is another step up the competitive ladder and club swimmers from East Kent compete as part of the East Invicta Excel Team and the clubs highest points scorer this years is : Finn Wood Next we have the Senior Squad trophy. This is awarded by the Club Coaches and is about contribution and support to the swimming programme. Hard work in training, setting an example and commitment to hard work. The Senior Squad trophy is nominated by the Senior Squad Coach and this year goes to a swimmer who has improved enormously during the season and gained considerable success. This swimmer will also be collecting a Club Record Certificate for setting a new record in the 13/14yrs 100m Butterfly of 1:04.47.  The 2015 Most Improved Senior squad trophy this year has been awarded to: Finn Wood Next we have the Junior Squad Shields. The Junior Squad Coaches make this award after reviewing performances throughout the year. This year we have two winners who have worked hard whilst in the Junior Squad and have shown great commitment. The winners this year are: Rico Newman-Morgan Isobel Goldsmtih Can I ask Hythe Aqua Club President Wendy Wiseman to present the National Award. This trophy is for the best achievement by a club member at National level. This year the trophy is shared between two of the older members of the club who are setting a brilliant example to us all: Firstly, “Graham Ling” a Hythe Aqua Masters swimmer competed in the ASA Open Water National Swimming Championships in Sheffield earlier in the year. Graham won this event last year and this year led the race almost all the way through the 3 km race. Unfortunately, Graham was beaten into second place on the line, just a half a body length after an hour of racing. Graham had a busy year also competing as part of a 6 person, over 70 years of age relay team that swam the channel in a new over 70’s record time. Secondly, we have David Staveley who last weekend competed in the Masters National Championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, with over 1,200 competitors taking

  • part. David enjoyed his best results in the Backstroke with Gold in the 200 metres,

Silver in the 100 metres and Bronze in the 50 metres. In the Individual Medley events David finished behind the winner in the 200 metres despite beating his own Kent record by over four seconds. In the 100 metre event he was still level with this same eventual winner after the first two sections of Butterfly and Backstroke but had to be content with another second place. Fantastic effort Graham & David, please come forward and accept the National

  • Trophy. National Trophy –awarded to Graham Ling/David Staveley

The Hythe Masters Team have had a very successful year once again and I would like to ask David Staveley the East Invicta President to present the East Invicta Masters Trophy to Club President Wendy Wiseman on behalf of the Masters Section. That is the end of the formal presentations and well done to everyone that won an award, also a big well done to all those that competed to the best of their ability and helped to raise the standard of competition. I would like to congratulate all our members on their performances throughout the year, their commitment to training and the club and wish you every success in the

  • future. I would also like to thank our guest this evening Barry Pluck from the Shepway

Sports Trust for attending. I don’t need to remind you that Hythe Aqua is a voluntary organisation that is run and administered by 40+ teachers, coaches, officials and administrators. Many of these individuals give up many hours of their time to teach, coach, manage the accounts, carry out admin tasks etc, etc. Quite simply without all the work of these people there would be no club – can you please show your support for these individuals who turn up week after week for you in the normal way : Thank you, now please enjoy the family disco and buffet. Jim Parris Chairman Hythe Aqua Swimming Club 6th November 2015
