Objectives

  • To provide knowledge of selected advanced topics in IT systems security
  • To give participants practice at investigating topics in the literature and

producing written and oral presentations which distill the essential features of a topic on the basis of a literature study

Course Format

  • Combination of lectures and project work.
  • Main focus: student's "research projects"
  • presentation of this work during the Student

Workshops towards the end of the course

  • written as a research paper
  • Finally, students will be required to provide peer

review of two other student projects.

Topics

  • Topics considered in the courses vary from year to year.
  • 2012: security in pervasive computing systems (ubiquitous computing or

ambient intelligence)

  • how changes in the computing paradigm affect the common assumptions

made in traditional security

  • we will study a number of areas of special interest and examine security

solutions proposed to address the challenges in pervasive computing systems

Research Projects

  • Students will be required to define their own “research project”
  • A research project:
  • analyses a security problem in pervasive computing
  • proposes a solution that addresses that problem

The proposed solution should define the security model and present the design for a protocol/mechanism that solves the problem

  • No implementation will be required in this course (implementation and

evaluation of the proposed solution may be considered a topic for a subsequent special course)

Activity Calendar

  • Please note that the format of the course has changed this year, so the

activity calendar below is preliminary and will be subject to change.

  • Project work + student workshops + peer review session:
  • (*) At least one meeting must be held with the "research project" supervisor

(NDRA or CDJ) during these 3 weeks
