• The decision to exit the EU means the NSA needs to identify our key

needs, and to prioritise those needs, in preparation for forthcoming negotiations

• There is still a lot that is completely unknown and even the steps that

will be taken are unclear – but if we have thought things through we will be better placed to influence…

• The plan is for NSA regions to discuss these issues and feed views

through to English committee and UK Policy and Technical Committee to inform our positions

• There will be many general views that affect the entire industry, and

there will be views unique to the various nations

• We already have a number of agreed policy positions and vision

documents that we can use so this is not about reviewing these – its more about discussing things that Brexit will affect

• The UK needs a vision for food and farming

more than ever before. The UK Govts 25 year plan is still unfinished. The devolved nations have strategies and plans – do these need checking in light of Brexit?

• NSA is a grass roots democratically structured

association that is representative of the sector – we need to be involved in forthcoming discussions

Markets and trade

• Continued access to the French (in particular) market is

essential and lamb needs to be considered as a priority in trade negotiations

• We need either to be on a level playing field – or protect
• ur market. If the field is unlevel the market must be

protected

• Development of our domestic market is essential –

replacement of the EU sheepmeat campaign resources

• Urgent investment and plan for opening trade into non EU

markets

• New Zealand quotas – we need to review EU allocations

• Smooth transition relating to farm support and

programmes

• Need for ongoing basic payment – but rationale needs

to be clearer – to support food security and keep food prices at reasonable level

• Payments far more focussed on productive land

management – active farmers – and with compensatory payments for marginal and upland farming based on broadening of public goods

• RDP type (incl. ag environment etc) support to

continue to improve performance/ land management and farm infrastructure
