Välkomsten - the first step into the Swedish school

Mapping and screening must be completed not later than two months after the student has entered the Swedish school. (Education Act 3 chapter 12 c §) A newly arrived student: 1. has been living abroad 2. lives in Sweden now, and 3. started his/hers education after Swedish mandatory school year one begins the same year as she/he turned seven years old. After four years in the Swedish school the student is no longer considered as a newly arrived student. (Education Act, 3 chapter 12 §)

  • A newly arrived student’s knowledge must be evaluated. This is not

applicable if obviously unnecessary. (Education Act 3 chapter 12c §)

  • A newly arrived student shall be put in relevant grade with regards

to age, pre knowledge and personal circumstances. (Education Act 3 chapter 12 d §)

  • From April 15, 2016, there is a new screening guidance from the

Swedish National Agency for Education. This shall be used for newcomers knowledge evaluation. (Regulated in School Ordinance 2016:10)

Entitled to native language teaching

A student who has a guardian with mother tongue other than Swedish, should be

  • ffered mother tongue teaching if:
  • The language is the pupil’s daily

language in the home.

  • The student has basic knowledge of the

language.

Study guidance in mother tongue - the right to knowledge and special support

Children and young people who recently arrived to Sweden and are not able to follow the lessons in Swedish language are entitled to receive special support in their mother tongue

The student will develop strategies for learning if he or she is given support in a combination of Swedish as well as their native language.
