ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

• Couchiching’s approach to economic development is that without

revenue generation we cannot do what we need to do for our community.

• Social issues including an ongoing drug and violence problem

requires us to develop or adopt and implement innovative solutions with a focus on long-term success.

• We have a beautiful bay that is only truly shared with our

neighbours at Mitaanjigamiing First Nation – it could be an almost private area for recreation and cottage development.

• We have a lot of very capable entrepreneurs
• We have a number of skilled workers
• But, we have limited capital to invest

CHALLENGES

• Some Councillors still want to decide everything
• Our land claims cost us a lot of money but seen as an investment for

the future

• Our Board of Directors are all entrepreneurial, business owners or

Consultants with a lot of education/training (but they are busy too)

• How to prioritize all that we want to do?
• Divisions and jealousy
• Lack of work ethic
• “Just do it” and the importance of due diligence
• Cost of Advisors and Experts (and their travel)
