SETTING: Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush

EXODUS 3:13-14 Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.”

EXODUS 3:15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.”

EXODUS 3:16 “Go and assemble the elders of Israel and say to them: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt.”

MOSES’ CONCERN: What if they ask me Your name?

He is not dependent on anyone or anything else to exist.

FIVE IMPLICATIONS OF GOD’S SELF-EXISTENCE:

1. GOD IS ETERNAL

PSALM 90:2 Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.

2. GOD IS THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE

COLOSSIANS 1:16-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.

3. GOD IS IMMUTABLE

MALACHI 3:6 Because I, Yahweh, have not changed, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.

4. GOD IS OBJECTIVE

PSALM 50:21 These things you have done and I kept silence; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.

5. GOD IS RELATIONAL

JOHN 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

MARK 14:62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.”

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

1. Recognize God doesn’t need me

ACTS 17:24-25 The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.

2. Learn to depend on God for life and ministry

JOHN 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
