What is CBD? With all of the misinformation and vague education across the internet regarding CBD, we wanted to set a few things straight.

  2. MYTH : CBD is a fad. FACT : Cannabis and CBD have been around for a centuries. It’s first medicinal use was by Emperor Shen Neng of China in 2,737 BCE.
MYTH : It’s dangerous. FACT: There are no reported incidents of severe side effects from CBD, even at higher quantities MYTH : It’s a snake oil. FACT : While there are additional studies to be done, there is a multitude of evidence that CBD does support various bodily systems, which we’ll go into further in the next slides.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CBD? CBD OIL COMES IN 3 FORMS CBD , short for Cannabidiol, is one of Isolate: just CBD over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Broad spectrum : a select variety of terpenes and cannabinoids in addition to THC is perhaps the most widely known the CBD, usually containing no THC . cannabinoid, found in higher concentrations in marijuana than hemp. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating, Full spectrum : this includes the full meaning it does not cause a high. profile of terpenes and cannabinoids, including THC. At Joy Organics, we derive our CBD from a special proprietary strain of hemp, Both broad and full spectrum are but it can also be found in marijuana. believed to create a greater impact, as numerous beneficial compounds work CBD interacts with the human body synergistically to support bodily through a variety of chemical pathways.
 functions.

  4. THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM The Human Endocannabinoid Systems (ECS) was discovered in 1992 and is composed of receptors and chemicals throughout the body. ECS is responsible for moderating mood, appetite, inflammation and most importantly, maintaining balance in the body. Phytocannabinoids : cannabinoids found in plants: mostly cannabis but also green tea, chamomile, and others. Endocannabinoids : cannabinoids found in all animals, including humans.

  5. Stress and inflammation are normal responses to certain situation and stimuli, but when our body’s stay in these states of imbalance, we can have a host of issues: PTSD, chronic pain, etc. Sometimes our bodies lacks sufficient cannabinoids to rebalance itself; this is when phytocannabinoids like CBD can step in. CBD works within our endocannabinoid system, mimicking and influencing our body’s production of cannabinoids and restoring homeostasis and wellness.

  6. CBD increases the amount of the endocannabinoid anandamide , which responsible for the “runner's high” and is the body’s natural antidepressant. More anandamide means more serotonin which generally means more bliss. CBD also slows the breakdown adenosine throughout the body. At high levels, this chemical helps promote oxygenation and blood flow and provides anti-inflammatory effects. CBD fun fact: overdoses of opiates have significantly declined in all states where cannabis has been legalized medically and recreationally

  7. CBD AND OTHER SYSTEMS Unlike some cannabinoids, CBD doesn’t stop at our endocannabinoid system. It also directly activates the 5- HT1A receptor, which is part of the nervous system and is associated with sleep and relaxation. CBD also binds to TRPV1 receptors and interacts with the GABA-A receptors. These receptors are implicated in a variety of bodily responses such as pain perception, anxiety, nausea, and cell health.
US Department of Health was awarded a patent for the use of CBD and other cannabinoids for the treatment of neurological diseases. (2003)

FURTHER RESOURCES While the wide range of effects and benefits of CBD are still being studied and discovered, we are confident that not only do the thousands of human stories, but also the existing research, speaks to what this plant can do. To learn more about CBD, we recommend checking out our blog, CBD School, and Project CBD for more information. If you want to do a deep dive into the inner workings of CBD and cannabis, we recommend the book CBD: a Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis.
