  23. In August 1909 the German teacher Richard Schirrmann,had thought to make lodging for his students. He published this idea for the first time in 1910 in an essay about "Voksschuelerherbergen" (elementary school pupil lodgings) In 1912 the first youth hostel was opened,Altenia Castle,Germany At present there are 6000 Youth Hostels in 72 countries covering all the continents.

  26. The first Youth Hostel was formally opened at Tara Devi near Shimla on June 9, 1945 by H E Sir Bertrand Glancy, Chief Scout and Governor of the Punjab. All Youth Hostels were managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, India As of date there are 76 youth hostels all over India.
