HISTORY OF PONDICHERRY
Sage Agastya
He is an ancient Hindu Sage. He built an ashram called Agastiswaram. Incriptions about Him were found near Vedapuriswara Temple. At that time, existence of Sanskrit University was also found in Bahur Plates.
Roman Settlements
Excavations of Arikamedu region indicates Roman settlements between 2 nd century B.C and 2 nd Century A.D Trade centres called Poduca or Poduke. Later it was identified as present pondicherry by historians and geographers

Origin of French Rule
In the year 1673,Francois Martin, the First French Governor to Pondicherry Only in 1699, by “ traité de Ryswick ” brought stability to Pondicherry and developed the town. In the Eighteenth Century Pondicherry was laid out on a grid pattern and it grew considerably.

• After 1816, the French obtained permanent control over Pondicherry. • The next 138 years witnessed rebuilding of Pondicherry with significant developments in the areas of infrastructure, education and law. • The French retained Pondicherry even after the British left India in 1947.
• In 1954, Pondicherry passed hands from the French to independent India. • Became a Union Territory with headquarters at Pondicherry. • In May 1956, the treaty of transfer was signed in Delhi.

In August 1909 the German teacher Richard Schirrmann,had thought to make lodging for his students. He published this idea for the first time in 1910 in an essay about "Voksschuelerherbergen" (elementary school pupil lodgings) In 1912 the first youth hostel was opened,Altenia Castle,Germany At present there are 6000 Youth Hostels in 72 countries covering all the continents.

FIRST YOUTH HOSTEL IN INDIA
The first Youth Hostel was formally opened at Tara Devi near Shimla on June 9, 1945 by H E Sir Bertrand Glancy, Chief Scout and Governor of the Punjab. All Youth Hostels were managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, India As of date there are 76 youth hostels all over India.
