Three phases of later life… PPI

Pensions Policy Institute

But not everyone will transition through these phases in a linear way Independent Phase Decline Phase Dependent Phase

low or no physical limitations mild physical limitations severe physical limitations

slide-6

Women and those in lower wealth quintiles are less likely to be in this phase, while women who are in the Independent Phase are more likely to find their freedom restricted by caring responsibilities.

Once individuals transition into the Decline Phase, they could benefit from support in maintaining physical health and where possible slowing declines in order to protect them from the more severe risks present in the Dependent Phase.

Those with lower levels of wealth are more likely to experience this phase at younger ages: at age 70 more than 50%

  • f those in the lowest wealth quintile are in the Dependent

Phase, compared to just 16% of those in the highest quintile.

Key takeaways

PPI

Pensions Policy Institute

Some groups of

  • lder people are

more likely to experience poorer later life

  • utcomes

Support in elongating the Independent Phase and subsequently the Decline Phase could improve later life experiences Targeting support at groups that are most at risk is likely to have the greatest impact
