Prop 1: Replacement of current Maintenance And Operations Levy that will expire Prop 2: New Construction Renovation and Safety Project bond measure

  • Rebuild of Yelm Middle School
  • Rebuild of Southworth Elementary
  • Remodel of Prairie Elementary
  • Safety upgrades at all schools
  • Construct a 9th grade facility

  • 6-8 middle school
  • 9-12 high school

Purpose of 9th Grade Campus

  • Always the intent of the district to have a 9-12 HS

Program

  • Provides us the opportunity to meet the intent in

the most educationally appropriate manner

 Design around students needs and how they learn  Create gradual transition to high school environment  Increase access to activities and resources on high school campus  Engage 9th grade students at high school for all four years

WHY Do We Need a 9th Grade Campus?

  • Our 9th grade students are our most vulnerable

students

  • We currently have 9th transition, 10th transition and the

joining of 2 middle schools

  • Nearly all graduation issues trace back to grades 9 and

10

  • 24 credit graduation requirement is coming (current 7th

graders) and this is a significant increase.

  • 9th grade students need strong four year plan

HOW will a 9th grade campus help our students?

  • One transition to high school
  • Nearly all coursework on the 9th grade wing
  • Regular and planned integration into high school life (assemblies,

activities, events)

  • Full participation in co-curricular sports and activities
  • 9th grade only guidance counseling
  • Strong mentoring from/with student leaders
  • Strong orientation program in August
  • Some “walk-over” to academic programs in math, arts and

eventually Advanced Placement

  • By June, ready for full integration with 10-12 students

  • Separate building or wing

located by the current greenhouses and Auto Shop (2 minute walk from office)

  • Would be part of a 9-12 High

School campus

  • School within a school concept
  • 9th grade students would

gradually be integrated into all high school operations

  • Have its own guidance

counselor

  • On site administrator and

support staff

work with HS teachers for curriculum alignment

WHY will the 9th grade campus be successful?

  • Develop sense of independence and of their class.

 Team approach to coming together as a high school

  • All structures support students as high schoolers
  • Teaching and support staff committed to needs of 9th graders
  • Strong 9th grade guidance counseling. High school and beyond plan, college

and career readiness planning

  • Smaller location helps build supports for all students.

 Reduce F rates  Increase on time graduation rates  Decrease rates of school discipline

  • We are all YHS Tornados!

 Transition is gradual and planned  Teach HS traditions is one smaller setting  Renaissance/PATH activities with high school

WHEN would this building be ready and WHAT would it contain?

  • Open Fall 2018
  • Current 6th grade students will be first group (Class of 2022)
  • 410 students currently in 6th grade
  • Approximately 20 teachers
  • Facility would include:

 Gym and Commons/Eating Area  Office and Bus Loop  Safe path to main campus  Second exit from YHS campus
