H.O.P.E. Educational Material. hopehandsdon@gmail.com / 353-(0)1-887-8404

A synthetic drug that stimulates the heart and respiration, constricts blood vessels and induces sleeplessness. First synthesized in Germany 1887. Originally marketed as Benzedrine in the 1920s and was used for suppressing appetite or preventing narcolepsy. ketone chemical classes, functioning as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI) and acting as a stimulant on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system.

 a-PVP was developed in the 1960 and has been available on

the research chemical market for several years now, and is used as a recreational drug.

All that comes with the Erratic Addictive behaviours - Financial / Legal / Order / Intimidation problems A rise in domestic disputes Children:

  • risk of being exposed to toxic fumes, fire, and chemical burns
  • Exposure to drugs and unsanitary conditions
  • Increase in child abuse and neglect cases
  • Increased risk for substance abuse among children in later life
  • attachment disorder / parents fail to respond to basic needs.
  • Caregivers become careless, irritable, and violent

Pregnancy: Possible effects found in the few human studies that exist include increased rates of premature delivery, placental abruption (early separation of a normal placenta from the wall

  • f the uterus), retarded fetal growth, and cardiac and brain

abnormalities.

Overdose treatment for Crystal Meth

  • Often treated with benzodiazepines, to lessen the drug-induced activity in

the brain and body.

  • In some cases, general anaesthesia was used because sedatives were

ineffective.

  • Treatment in the emergency department for severe hypertension,

tachycardia, agitation, or seizures consists of large doses of lorazepam in 2– 4 mg increments every 10–15 minutes intravenously or intramuscularly. It has been found that the use of any beta blockers to treat hypertension in these patients can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

  • Alternatively, Clonidine has been used clinically in the treatment of acute

stimulant intoxication and withdrawal

User becomes depressed Becomes lethargic, has no energy Craving for more May feel suicidal

slide-27

Harm Reduction: There is no way to reduce the direct harm of these type of drugs – the very nature of the effects, you cannot ask people to control their use or use less. They need help and support to stop. The harm reduction around associated behaviors are the same as with any

  • ther drug – safe / clean injecting, and condom use.

There are no pharmacological treatments or substitutions for designer drug / methamphetamine dependence. Antidepressant medications can be used to combat the depressive symptoms

  • f withdrawal.

The most effective treatment for addiction is cognitive behavioral interventions, which modify a patient's thinking, expectancies, and behavior while increasing coping skills to deal with life stressors. Residential Treatment can be affective in getting someone some distance from the use, and an

  • pportunity to learn relapse prevention skills.

Recovery support groups are also effective and can lead to long-term drug-free recovery.
