- All pupils continue with a broad general education covering all eight areas of the curriculum
- English and Mathematics are compulsory.
- Religious and Moral Education, Physical Education and Personal and Social Education are
compulsory and are part of the Core education.
- Pupils choose 7 subjects to study in addition to the compulsory subjects.
- Pupils must choose one subject from each of the following five areas to ensure a broad
education

S3 into S4
- Pupils continue with English and Mathematics and five other
subjects from S3.
- Religious and Moral Education, Physical Education and Personal
and Social Education are compulsory and are part of the Core education.
- Pupils can choose one new course rather than continue with
their fifth subject. The new courses are:
- Administration & IT
- Business / Business Management
- Creative Industries: Creative Computing
- Enterprise & Employability / Leadership Award
- Environmental Science
- Fife College Course
- Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies
S3 into S4
- Pupils will receive SQA Qualifications on successful
completion of the seven courses at the end of S4.
- The Creative Industries: Creative Computing course leads to
a National Progression Award (NPA) at levels 4 or 5.
- The Enterprise & Employability / Leadership Award will lead
to an NPA Level 4 or 5 / SCQF Level 5 or 6 Award and is based on projects associated with the QAHS chicken initiative.
- Some courses at Fife College will lead to an award for a
single Unit at National level while others will lead to an NPA.
- Pupils choosing a Fife College Course will attend the college
- n a Monday and Wednesday afternoon and will be
responsible for travelling to and from the college themselves.

S4 into S5 and S5 into S6
- Pupils and parents must think of where the pupil wishes to
go after leaving school and choose courses in S6 that will help them get there. This is particularly important for those planning on going to university.
- All pupils will have timetabled activities for 32 periods in the
week.
- All pupils in S5 and S6 will have one period of Personal and
Social Education and one period of Health and Wellbeing.
- The remaining 30 periods are for timetabled activities.
S4 into S5 and S5 into S6
- Advanced Higher courses will have up to 6 taught periods
per week.
- Higher courses will have 6 taught periods per week.
- National 5 and National 4 courses are for 4 periods per
week (apart from National 5 Mathematics which will have six periods for pupils who have achieved National 4 Mathematics).
- Pupils may choose to attend Fife College two afternoons a
week (4 periods per week).
- Pupils choosing a Fife College Course will attend the college
- n a Monday and Wednesday afternoon and will be
responsible for travelling to and from the college themselves.
S4 into S5 and S5 into S6
- Pupils may choose a mix of Advanced Highers, Highers and
Nationals provided they meet the entry qualifications.
- To promote independent learning and to enable pupils to
complete the additional work required, pupils studying Advanced Higher courses will be allocated 2 periods per week as subject-specific study periods for each Advanced Higher they are taking.
- The exception is Advanced Higher Art, where an additional 6
periods per week will be allocated to complete an Art Portfolio.
S4 into S5 and S5 into S6
- The combination of courses will result in 28 or 30 periods of
courses.
- If a pupil has a combination that leads to 28 periods they will
take a 2 period Complimentary Curriculum course.
- Many Complimentary Curriculum courses will lead to an award.
- Pupils will choose the Complimentary Curriculum course at the
same time as their other courses.
