  9. Summer Tips on How to Prepare your student for Middle School 1. Read, Read, READ! 2. Work on organization. 3. Make a study plan and place. 4. Research extra-curricular activities via our website and clubs 5. We love our parents, stay involved this will also help your student with adjusting to middle school! 6. If your child does not wear a watch regularly, this summer may be a good time to start. This will help them with their time management skills and allowing them to get to class on time every day. (This is totally optional)

  10. Some Rules to Keep in Mind 1. Always make good choices! 2. Cell phones are allowed during instructional use only; when not in use they are to be placed in bookbags. If cell phones are used at an inappropriate time they will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent/guardian. 3. ALMS follows JCPS dress code. Dress to impress! 4. Remind students to be respectful of all students and adults.

  11. Student Responsibility Middle School is BIG on student responsibility so please foster responsibility in your student by asking them about their day, their assignments, and checking in. Responsibility Tips 1. Students should have their agenda everyday and filled out with assignments and events. 2. Having and completing homework/classwork when due. 3. If a student is absent they will need to collect missed assignments from teachers and complete them. Assignments can frequently be found on Google Classroom and/or teacher websites. 4. Being prepared each and every day with required school materials and items. Please call your student’s teacher if you have a question about classroom materials.

  13. Homework/Agendas At any time if there is a question or concern regarding your student’s academic performance or behaviors, please contact your student’s teacher. Agendas: Parents need to check these nightly. Students will write in their agendas daily/weekly for homework, tests, and any important upcoming dates. Agendas are the students responsibility and are the biggest communication tool between school and home. Stamps: Stamping is a process to ensure students are staying responsible for their work and behavior. Example: If a student misses his/her homework they may receive a stamp for incomplete work. The student is then responsible for completing the assignment and having parents sign for acknowledgment. Once this is completed it is as if the student never received a stamp. If a student receives 2 or more stamps in one week this may result in a loss of privileges on Friday.

  14. Math Math Facts (1- 12) - Practice all summer using online games and even free apps for your devices! Our 6th grade curriculum is an inquiry-based mathematics program. It helps students actively focus on math problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections. These math practices require students to look deeper and connect problem solving to practical situations. This program provides a powerful inquiry model for learning mathematics. Connecting mathematical ideas to students’ everyday world.

  15. English Language Arts Our 6th grade curriculum focuses on literature and informational texts. A few of the main skills that we address are understanding and analyzing themes and main ideas, comparing and contrasting texts, and citing evidence within texts. Students research topics and present findings in a variety of methods. We also integrate Social Studies and Science when we do novels and research projects. We use technology on a regular basis to enhance learning. ELA teachers use interactive notebooks, so each student will need at least 2 composition books for this class. Students are encouraged to read, read, read over the summer!
