What does this mean for food businesses?

THE SAYING "WE EAT WITH OUR EYES" RINGS TRUER THAN EVER IN THE AGE OF

  • INFORMATION. THE PROLIFERATION OF

FOODIE CULTURE ACROSS SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BEEN ON A STEADY RISE IN RECENT YEARS. IN FACT, AT THE END OF 2018 THE NUMBER OF IMAGES POSTED WITH THE #FOOD EXCEEDED 188 MILLION

Getting started with Instagram

It can be confusing for potential customers if your Instagram name is different to that of your business and if your page lacks a familair identity..

Ensure your 'handle' and brand identity is appropriate & consistent

Benefits include access to 'Insights', ability to publically display contact details making it easier for potential customers to get in touch and the chance to place 'sponsored ads'.

Switch to a Business Profile

This will allow for 'cross-posting' in the form of images, stories and advertising.

Link Instagram with your Business Facebook page

Switching to a business profile

HOW TO DO IT....

.

ww.andrew-whitty.com

In your personal Instagram account go to your profile page and click on the Settings icon (a gear symbol). Scroll down your list of options and tap on the Switch to Business Profile

  • link. Make sure that you haven’t set your account as a Private

Account. It will then ask you for your Facebook profile and a Facebook Page to connect to. Fill in the relevant details. You will need to be an administrator of the Facebook page. Instagram will then ask you for your business contact details. Remember to write these as you would want your customers to see them. This includes your business email address, phone number, and address. Once you have done the above steps, you will officially have an Instagram Business Profile.

Your Product

By far the easiest thing to shout about is your passion for your product. What is it? Who should buy it? Where can they get it? When is it availble? Why is it unique?

Your People

Sharing a story about the people behind your business is a great way to engage with your audience and introduce the 'human element'. Guaranteed to be popular and a way of building a relationship with your customers.

U.G.C

User Generated Content is becoming increasingly popular and means less hard work for you. It's a way of sharing reviews of your business, highlighting its popularity.and building trust in your product.

Food Trends

Pancake Day, World Vegan Day, National Margherita Day. It seems like each week there's a reason to celebrate food and drink. ,Make the most of it and time your posts to go out to maximise brand awareness.

Different styles of Instagram Posts

A picture paints a thousand words...

A FANTASTIC IMAGE IS GREAT BUT WHAT MAKES IT EVEN BETTER IS THE STORY BEHIND IT. WHEN CREATING YOUR TEXT THERE ARE A FEW TRICKS OF THE TRADE TO ENSURE THAT IT'S JUST AS THUMB-STOPPING AS THE IMAGE!

LET'S TALK ABOUT TEXT BABY...

Nobody scrolls social media wanting to read War & Peace. When creating your text think about the key messages you want to get across and do it in a brief, concise way. You only have your followers' attention for a short time. Make it count!

The News; in brief

Instagram's key demographic is 'millennials' who prefer a much more informal approach when it comes to being sold to, Try introducing humour into posts whether it be a 'dad joke' style food pun or sharing a funny insight into the life of your 'employee of the week.'

Laughter is the best medicine

Here’s ... Billy! ฀฀We have caught him outside his natural habitat (the kitchen) as his vacant stare suggests he may be wondering why he ever joined us! Full timer Billy has been with us 3 months, with previous experience in local restaurants and while he had plenty of other offers, he still chose us! He loves surfing, his dogs and his van ฀฀ oh & cooking seafood ฀... He has travelled to NZ and OZ and now finds himself working the Friday nights and getting creative with the menu!😆 Billy plans one day to have a place of his own, but we are hanging on to him until then... I’m constantly on his case to keep an eye on his eggs ฀ ฀

www.andrew-whitty.com As it's not just our chums following us on here now, here's a lil insight into us and what we do. We're two twins from Swansea with a lil Italian blood in us, our mother died after a battle with cancer in April 2017 and it gave us the kick up the ass we needed to get out there stop pulling pints and do something we'd enjoy. A year after we sold our first Pizza Boyz pizza, a traditionally Napoli style pizza with some fairly untraditional toppings, one of our favourites for example being 'The Hoisin One' with a hoisin sauce base which we can't bare to take off the menu because it's so good. We're based at The Royal Oak pub, Penclawdd Friday to Sunday and The Optimist bar in Uplands every Wednesday night! Unless we have any bookings, which we will state on social media throughout the week.

Hashtags

It's all about quality not quantity

www.andrew-whitty.com

Instagram has gone through a lot

  • f changes in the past year, including

new features, tools, and a whole new video channel. But one thing has remained constant throughout: the importance of Instagram hashtags.

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 4 40 30 20 10

Every post you create can be accompanied by an Instagram caption and a few hashtags (up to 30), and these hashtags help in the process of content discovery. By using these three hashtags, the image is cataloged so other Instagram users who enjoy similar foods/products can easily find it. So while a relatively simple concept, hashtags can really get your posts off the ground and into the hands of the right audience.

#FOOD - 188MILLION

#FOODPORN - 88 MLN

#FOODIE - 38 MLN

#NOM - 4 MLN

As great as the most popular hashtags are for getting those 'likes' up and reaching a wide audience, they aren't the best when it comes to reaching people that could become real customers. There's a growing trend for more location specific hashtags aimed at reaching people in your local area and the ones more likely to be interested in your product. In fact, the #SwanseaFood has been used 3.2k times and is becoming increasingly popular. It even has it's own page in a local magazine!

#MadeInWales - 78.2k

#WelshFood - 7.5k
