The presenter will share the overall structure of our organization and how the partnership was developed to connect the four STEM units in the College. Strengthening the influence/impact of the units in supporting and working together to increase STEM efforts at the college and community.

Mission

To enable and support STEM learning through the formation of cooperative and collaborative relationships with campus and community-based partners through a commitment to STEM learning for: ➢ PreK-16 learners in schools, community agencies, business and corporate contexts, and informal settings; ➢ Professional educators and students in pre-professional programs, in both informal and formal settings; ➢ Learners with exceptional and/or special needs; and, ➢ Inclusion of underrepresented and diverse populations/communities.

Origin

Existing STEM units in the Watson College of Education recognized the impact they could make if they collaborated on a larger scale. Together they formed the STEM Learning Cooperative. Although the units intentionally collaborate, each unit continues to have its own mission, goals, staff, etc.

STEM SENC: A Current Initiative

STEM SENC (Southeastern North Carolina) The STEM LC is the lead organization for STEM SENC. The STEM SENC ecosystem includes organizations, schools, institutions, and businesses in surrounding counties (i.e., Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, Harnett, Hoke, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland) who seek to provide access to STEM learning opportunities for all students regardless of geographic isolation, socioeconomic status, culture or

  • ability. In a national competition, STEM SENC was one of twelve applicants selected to join Cohort 4 of the STEM

Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice.

Center for Assistive Technology

The Center serves as a Lending and Education Site for individuals with disabilities and those who provide education, therapy, intervention, and care for

  • them. This facility is housed at the University
  • f North Carolina Wilmington and offers

materials and equipment, parent and student trainings, teacher education, and consultations to families. We focus in

  • ffering STEM educational opportunities to

all children. The aim of the Center for Assistive Technology is to provide an avenue for educating persons on the availability and use of assistive technologies that can provide the freedom and independence desperately sought by many persons who are faced with temporary or life-long challenges due to their disabilities.

Center for Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CESTEM)

  • Dr. Carmen Sidbury, Director

CESTEM provides professional development opportunities to regional K-16 instructors and educational opportunities to regional K-12 students to improve the quality of pre-college STEM education. CESTEM strengthens the university's regional engagement and outreach activities through events such as the Wilmington Regional Science Olympiad Tournament, Southeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair and SeaPerch, where over 1200 students participate annually. The Center also has a vibrant Technology Loan Program (TLP) where regional teachers and student teachers can borrow a range of STEM equipment and receive assistance with integrating technology into their classrooms.

Junior Seahawk Academy

Jr Seahawk Academy is an educational day program designed specifically for middle-grade students (ages 10-14). Targeting students from economically disadvantaged and underrepresented populations to develop interests in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), health, and education careers while participating in various fun, hands-on activities that promote

  • learning. Activities each summer

include exciting technology explorations, seminars, and creative projects designed and presented by students.

Youth Programs

Youth Programs serves as a pipeline for engaged learning between the university and the preK-12 community by offering year round opportunities for youth to experience hands-on, problem-based STEM. School Year Programs Weekend Programs Summer Camps Grant outreach Afterschool Engineering Outreach at DC Virgo Preparatory Academy Summer Camp with Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington Weekend Literacy Live! for preschoolers Grant program supports STEM for rural counties
