communities.

influenced by higher education (College of Wooster, The Ohio State University’s Agricultural Institute and Akron University’s Wayne College), and religious sects such as the Amish and Mennonite.

  • 3. Wayne County has a long-standing history of philanthropic support

and involvement from the community.

Priority Problem to Be Addressed

The Wayne County Impact Group will address underage drinking. We will address this substance because:

  • Annual alcohol use rate is 27% for

8th grade students and 45% for 10th grade students

  • 30-day alcohol use rate is 9% for 8th

grade students and 14% for 10th grade students

* Percentages are rounded off to nearest whole

  • number. Data is from the 2015 and 2014 Youth Asset

and Substance Use Survey.

Priority Population

These are the most important things you need to understand about our priority population:

  • 1. Seventy-six percent (76%) of local youth come from a two-parent

home.

  • 2. There is a strong high school sports culture throughout the county

and many students are active in more than one sport or club. However, the lack of public transportation makes it difficult for many youth to participate.

  • 3. Individuals and families from varied economic backgrounds live

closely together, and help create a diverse culture within the schools.

Problem Statement

Twenty-seven percent (27%) of 8th graders and 45% of 10th graders in Wayne County reported drinking alcohol in the past year, both rates are higher than the national average (18% for 8th grade and 38% for 10th grade).

* Percentages are rounded off to nearest whole number. Data is from the 2015 and Youth Asset and Substance Use Survey.
