Acting in Person and In Style Australia by Carol Wimmer – I use this book when learning how to prepare monologues, duologues, acting skills (voice workshops). It is also brilliant for learning a range of performance styles. Lighting and Sound by Neil Fraser – everything you need to know about lighting and sound in a simple easy to understand way. Stage Design and Props by Michael Holt – As above. An absolute gem of a book if you want to learn about set design and making. Costume and Make-Up by Michael Holt Ditto as above. The Hollywood Standard: The Complete and Authoritative Guide to Script Format and Style by Christopher Riley This book is not a how-to and it doesn't contain career advice -- it is simply focused on formatting. While there is no "final word" on any screenplay formatting debate and any rule you think is an "industry standard" is just as likely to be broken by your favorite writer, I find it helpful to have a resource that can help you figure out how to deal with text message conversations, flashbacks, song lyrics, and syntactical issues. No matter what genre you're working in, one goal for your screenplay should be for it to read well, and knowing some best practices formatting-wise can always help in that regard. The Filmmaker’s Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age (2013 Edition) by Steven Ascher and Edward Pincus. A staple of filmmaker’s bookshelves for well over a decade, the latest edition of The Filmmaker’s Handbook has revitalized all of the essential knowledge which it has become known for and brought it right up to date. If you don’t own this book already, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Music: A very short introduction by Nicholas Cook [OUP 1998] This is the ‘Tardis’ of musical analysis. The Triumph of Music: Composers, Musicians and their Audiences by Tim Blanning [Allen Lane 2008] This read will give you the best-ever context for the way a composers' music was received in their own time. This is Your Brain on Music by Daniel Levitin [Atlantic Books 2007] Levitin combines his parallel careers in music and science into this examination of what actually happens to us when we experience music as listeners, performers or composers. The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green with W Timothy Gallwey [Doublebay Publishing] By the best-selling co-author of Inner Tennis, here's a book designed to help musicians overcome obstacles, help improve concentration, and reduce nervousness, allowing them to reach new levels of performing excellence and musical artistry. Confident Music Performance by Ruth Bonnetti [Words & Music Press, 2002] You've practised hard, you have ability – but are you able to walk

Orchestration by Walter Piston [W. W. Norton & Company] The author approaches orchestration from the premise that the principles can best be presented by analysis of musical examples. A Composer's Guide to Game Music by Winifred Phillips (MIT Press) Music in video games is often a sophisticated, complex composition that serves to engage the player, set the pace of play, and aid interactivity.

In the Blink of an Eye takes it all the way back to the basic, not unlike the David Mamet book (and it’s also based on a lecture). Even if some of the techniques are outdated, the actual psychological impact of editing is just as important as it’s ever been.
