The Al profiles arrived

Notes on the Al profiles

  • A number of the profiles have bends at the ends (below)

– CuYng process? Don’t think shipping because the crate was in great shape (although carried under the driver arm when delivered)

  • Laterally they fit nicely in the slots
  • They are a bit tall for the slots

– It takes force to put them in and they get scratches (right)

  • The nuts and M4 hardware work nicely
  • Lighter is going to make installa4on in the 4ght space

much easier!

The first 3 extrusions we pulled out

Ground plane notes

  • Stand by the my statement that these are

beau4ful!

  • A couple small things

– Each part has a copper colored region on the side flange – We guess it was the welder connec4on; could get around that by using stainless sandwich for the connec4on between the welder clamp and the ground – Loca4on where the pla4ng seems to have been etched or tarnished – The bends for the sides are rounded a bit and you cannot snug them up 1-2mm level

SloYng the ground planes

  • Since the holes (1/4”) are about the

size of the perfora4ons, the holes had to be cuYng out sec4ons between the holes in most cases

  • Rotary tool and carbide tools for

most holes – loud, but it works

– Deburr the backsides aher ini4al cut

APA cleaning

Tools of the trade

  • Water from first pass on insides of tubes (clockwise from upper right)
  • Deionized water tank – luckily can get bulk from Chemistry; straight tube brush
  • Cable brush pulled through the bent regions
  • Cleaning trough w/wash & rinse sides

Four stage cleaning:

  • Rough clean with acetone

– Could not get all marker off – some baked in welds

  • Alconox scrub

– 100 passes min to get a white cloth to come up clean – Many hours of scrubbing each – Soak rinse

  • Simple green

– Soak for 15 min – Scrub with brush/drill/cable brush

  • Flowing water rinse with agita4on
  • Flowed methyl rinse with agita4on

Aher process op4mized 4 person days for final cleaning – Parts were two-person lihs

Divider chain notes

  • Make a quick connec4on set up for tes4ng

divider chains (Mike/Marco)

– All of the divider chains survived shipping

  • Aher talking to the Lariat crew (Kearns @ BU)

they inly used a flux cleaner and not an ultrasounds for cleaning

– Planned to adopt that program unless people object

  • That cleaning is happening today
  • Since moun4ng hardware has to change form M5

to M4 when the Al profiles, need to add a washer to the board-side connec4on

Add APAs

12/15/16 11

The lower FC takes the load but don’t stop to admire un4l capture by top FC frames

Add top FC (captures APAs)

Temp hardware (will be M4 profile bolts) These inner most profiles will be bolted with shorter temp bolts for shipping and replaced in the pit

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Issue with 1 of 8 APA weldments causing alignment issues welded with outward angle; bent it => berer

12/15/16 14

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Tolerance build-up issue: floa4ng box beams should nest around CPA frame – too 4ght; Need to open up the gap today

12/15/16 15

SLIDE 16

Add FC walls frames

12/15/16 16

Notes

  • The missing pins are due to the set of offset

holes– will mark and slot out the holes today now that we know the right spots in the full assembly

  • Also tolerance build-up issues with the box

beam and APA connec4on. We will slot these slightly to make this work berer in the field

  • Part of this was the 4lted APA weldment

but not all

  • Remember this will be bad ergonomics

when sliding this between the cryostat wall and the TPC so make it work simply

  • Bolts on ends are stainless – metal OK there?
  • Structural so need to be metal…

To-do list

Today

  • Make the fixes noted and

reassemble

  • Photo op!
  • Load profiles into one FC wall and

look for deflec4on (Vic’s ask)

  • Tag and bag parts as we

disassemble

  • Cold test of APAs (for deflec4on

at midline)

  • Get lumber and make the FC

crates (2 of these)

  • Add endcaps to profiles

Through the weekend

  • Final soak and vacuum bake for

fiberglass parts

  • Load profiles and divider chains
  • Vacuum/Purge/Bag and over-bag

parts

  • Add travellers (bags opaque)
  • Upgrade the failed ground plane

crate (wall separated from base) Monday

  • Loading crates

Tuesday

  • Ship!
