chools has a virt ual educat ion program policy following a WVDE policy change.

 The program will offer eligible st udent s an online pat hway for

earning a high school diploma if t hey sat isfy t he graduat ion requirement s.

 Virt ual Educat ion has t wo opt ions:  Part-time students are enrolled in fewer t han 6 courses. 4 courses are required for sport s eligibilit y  Full-time students are enrolled in 6 courses.

Eligibility

 Any 9-12 grade st udent who resides in Prest on Count y and

complet es t he enrollment paperwork.

 Virt ual st udent s must meet st at e/ count y enrollment

requirement s such as immunizat ions, physical and dent al exams.

 The IEP t eam for special educat ion st udent s must meet and

det ermine if virt ual educat ion is t he correct placement for t he st udent .

Other Requirements

 Must be enrolled in t he first 10 days of t he semest er.  Must complet e t he virt ual educat ion orient at ion session.  Must meet t he course enrollment requirement s including

successful complet ion of prerequisit e courses.

 Must maint ain a 60%

(passing grade) in each course at all t imes.

 Must maint ain a 2.0 GP

A t o part icipat e in ext ra-curricular act ivit ies.

 Must have consist ent access t o int ernet service.  Must have reliable t ransport at ion t o and from PHS

for t est ing, t ut oring, at hletic and ext ra curricular part icipat ion.

How Does It Work?

 S

t udent s are enrolled in online courses t aught by t eachers using t he WV College and Career S t andards for each course. Online providers such as Edgenuit y and WV Virt ual S chool will be ut ilized.

 S

t udent s and parent s communicat e wit h t hem using t he respect ive online plat form.

 S

t udent s must st art t he course online upon enrollment .

 S

t udent s progress t hough t he inst ruct ional unit s using a comput er while at home or anot her locat ion.

 Assignment s are submit t ed elect ronically.  Assessment s (t est s or quizzes) t hat require a t est proct or will

t ake place at PHS wit h t he t ime t o be worked out wit h t he virt ual academic coach. Bot h dayt ime and evening t imes will be available.

How Does It Work?

 The PCS

virtual academic coach and/ or st aff from t he online provider will make regular cont act wit h st udent s and monit or progress.

 S

t udent s may be enrolled part t ime or full t ime in virt ual

  • courses. A full t ime virt ual st udent would t ake all courses

virt ually. A part -t ime virt ual st udent may t ake some courses virt ually and some at PHS but not enough t ot al courses t o be considered a full t ime st udent .

 S

tudents must earn the appropriate credits to qualify for graduation. A typical full time virtual student will take 6 courses per year for 4 years to qualify for graduation.

AT during t heir 11th grade year. This year t he school-day S AT is April 9, 2019.

 A PHS

st udent may t ake a course t hrough WV virt ual school t hat is not offered at t he school. S t udent s should work wit h t heir guidance counselor for t his. Part icipat ion in a virt ual course in t his manner will cont inue as it has in t he past and not make t he st udent a virt ual st udent .

Graduation Requirements

2018-2019 freshmen enrolling in the virtual option will be eligible to graduate with a PHS diploma provided they complete:

4 ELA credits

4 Math credits

3 S cience credits

4 social S tudies Credits

1 PE credit

1 Health credit

1 Fine Art credit

4 CTE completer or 2 foreign language and 2 career cluster electives

Attendance

 S

t udent s enrolled in t he full-0t ime virt ual program meet ing all course requirement s are exempt from at tendance requirement s. They are considered t o be in at t endance if t hey are progressing in t heir virt ual coursework at a rat e adequat e t o complet e t he course wit hin t he t imelines.

 S

t udent s who t ake any course at PHS are expect ed t o at t end t hat course daily. S t udent s will not be permit t ed t o remain on campus for t ime during which t hey are not at t ending a course

  • r act ivit y as supervision is not available.

Nest S teps

If you believe virtual education is the right option for your child you will need to enroll them as a student in Preston County S chools by completing the registration forms and providing the required documentation.

 Current students need not complete this paperwork again.

Upon enrollment the virtual school academic coach (and/ or other staff) will meet with you and your child to develop a PEP plan (or make changes if an existing student) and complete the virtual enrolment process.
