What Crop Protection Industry doing to uplift farmers productivity and income

  • Major companies doing lot of work in educating the farmers

about best agriculture practices including safe and judicious use

  • Many companies have developed innovative platforms/models
  • Use of digital platforms on increase so as to reach millions of

small and marginal farmers

  • In addition, individual companies doing various work under

CSR like i-clean, availability of portable water, clean energy efforts in rural areas.

  • There is excellent scope to work with Govt. in PPP mode

5 Models adopted by a company to promote good agriculture practices and increase productivity

Models for development of villages/districts for enhancing Agriculture productivity

  • Village adoption model with multiple services -

by UPL

  • Reference Farms models- With ripple affect in

adjoining cluster villages for key crops by Syngenta

  • Agriculture entrepreneurs model – covering large

number of small and marginal farmers by Syngenta

‘Seven’ Ways to double farmers income

  • Support in increasing productivity and higher cropping intensity
  • Provide cost-efficient services; advisory, mechanization, storage

facilities

  • Moving to high value crops
  • Primary handling of horticulture produce
  • Link farmers with markets/corporate procuring to enable higher

remuneration

  • Improve income by allied sources
  • Weather risk insurance

About Reference and Benchmark Farms

  • Benchmark farms= Use conventional products and

growing practices but are otherwise similar in conditions and farm characteristics to reference farm

  • Reference farms = Customers who follow optimized crop

protocols and practices and use of advised solutions on parts or all of their cultivation area

What is being done

  • Training on Soil health. Collection of soil

samples and Soil health analysis from reputed laboratory.

  • Advise on fertilizer use as soil health
  • Training on pests and diseases and designed

crop protocol.

  • Training on safe and judicious use and

Biodiversity practices.

Key objectives of the project is to make crops more efficient, improve farmland practices, help biodiversity and safe & judicious of crop protection products

By 2020, productivity and income of these farmers under reference will be measured

  • Educating about safe pesticide storage of Crop

protection products

  • Safe disposal of empty containers by linking to

local expert agencies.

  • Advise on border plants to avoid soil erosion

and increase pollination

Model 3 Developing Agri-entrepreneurship for productivity Improvement of small and marginal farmers

slide-16
SLIDE 16

It is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘creation’ Project for creating & nurturing

  • agri entrepreneurs
  • Create opportunity for smallholders

to enhance their productivity by right use of knowledge and technology

  • Contribute to food security

Improving socio economic conditions

  • f small and marginal farmers
slide-17
SLIDE 17

Service at the doorsteps for all round agriculture knowledge and technology

  • More than 80% Indian farmers have <2 hectares
  • 50% have minimal access to Knowledge, Inputs & Technologies (KITs)
  • In 2012 Project Nirmiti was conceived
  • Project started in most backward districts of Orissa, Assam and

Jharkhand

  • People with good agronomy knowledge, expertise about local

conditions and passion to work with rural communities were appointed as agri-entrepreneurs

  • KITs were provided to small farmers in remote areas thru Agri

entrepreneurs

slide-18
SLIDE 18

From concept to reality

Translating the concept of Project Nirmiti to reality was a huge learning experience …….Nirmiti - how it works

Syngenta develop agri-entrepreneurs, conducts training in crop solutions, campaigns and capability development

Crop solutions

Farm tools and equipment Soil testing

  • Agri. entrepreneurs

register farmers, support with knowledge, inputs and technologies Conducts campaign, gets orders and makes available KITs

Center of Excellence (CoE) stocks and supplies products/services against orders Farmers receive KITs at their doorstep and grow their productivity and income

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Establish sustainable business model pilots in smallholder geographies aimed at enhancing farmer yield and income Replicate & scale-up across geographies Ensure “self-sustainability”

10,000 smallholders 100,000 smallholders Million plus smallholders

2013-2015 2016-2017

Project Nirmiti- our ambition

The project has been scaled-up to

  • 3 states in 23 districts, 1,725 villages with an outreach of >64,000

smallholders through a network of 450 well trained and equipped Agri entrepreneurs

  • Collaboration of Syngenta, Agri entrepreneurs and smallholders
  • Productivity of rice farmers increased by 57% and profitability by 40%
slide-20
SLIDE 20

What people say

It is an honor to be a partner in Nirmiti where thrust is on the development of smallholders whom we will be depending on for our future food supplies.

Hitesh Shah, Director, Foggers India Ltd., COE Partner.

I am extremely happy that I am getting quality input and knowledge at the

doorstep.

Diganta Das, Farmer, Lakhimpur-Assam

When I began following the complete Syngenta protocol with support from the Nirmiti Team, a miracle happened! I got 35 quintals per acre from my plot which had till last year not given more than20 quintals of

  • utput! The resulting crop got readily accepted in the market due to its

superior quality. I am also thankful for the agronomy knowledge, pest management techniques and mechanization knowhow given to me by the Nirmiti team.

Chakradhar Giri Nirmiti Farmer, Odisha, IND

slide-21
SLIDE 21

The story of a typical Nirmiti smallholder farmer

Name - Chakradhar Giri Crop - Rice, farm size - 1.5 ha Location - Jamunaposi, a hilly region of Odisha, IND Before Nirmiti

  • Access to inputs - 164 km (6 hrs)
  • Farming practice - local rice variety and

with limited use of chemistry (generic), no access to know-how & technology

  • Yield - 1,400 kg/acre

After Nirmiti (2013 onwards)

  • Access to inputs - at his doorstep
  • Farming practice - Syngenta hybrid

with total solution, knowhow and technologies

  • Yield - 3,500 kg/acre

“I could never go to school, but with my increased income I can now provide a sound education to my younger siblings and my children.”

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Nirmati project model is now being replicated

Syngenta Foundation where it will be scaled up in next 5 years. Plan is to develop ~100,000 agri- entrepreneurship with input access technology & information and output linkages to lift small and marginal farmers and double their income.

What is the way forward

slide-24
SLIDE 24
  • Advise on right agronomic practices from seed to seed
  • Which crop to grow and when
  • Weather forecast
  • Soil Health
  • Availability/use of right agri-inputs ( seeds, fertilizer and

crop protection products)

  • Safe and judicious use of Crop protection products
  • Advise on Irrigation and usage of water – Hose reel

machine Technology? Crop losses due to pests are from 15-30% (Pre and Post Harvest) where crop protection industry can play major role to enhanced productivity and income.

slide-25
SLIDE 25

What is way forward for Government and Crop Protection Industry… just few ideas

  • Adopt few districts (preferably with Ministry of

Agriculture and respective State Govts.) in PPP Mode ??

  • Other Ministries coordination?
  • Top Ten companies adopt 1 district each for overall

agriculture development as per key indicators.

  • Select cluster of villages in the district for effective

implementation

  • Establish forward and backward linkages through

eNAM

  • Local KVK,s and University to be roped in.
slide-26
SLIDE 26

What is way forward for Government and Crop Protection Industry… just few ideas

  • Baseline studies by independent agency in 2019 and then

work to make it model districts within span of 5 years.

  • Local MP/MLA funds also to be used?
  • Funds spend/dedicated for these activities to be covered under

CSR?

  • All activities should be coordinated/monitored through district

collectors/commissioner

  • Connection with Niti aayog?
  • Time lines to be decided

Kick off the projects in 1st Qtr of 2019? To be deliberated further among the Industry and Government
