Description of Easy Move function

Easy Move System

The Easy Move system is composed of :

  • an EPB (Electric Parking Brake) based on “cable puller” system.

The EPB system uses the rear brake calipers to apply the braking effort.

  • an ESP system. The ESP system uses the braking system integrated on the

vehicle to perform the Easy Move function.

  • a parking brake command for the driver.
  • a longitudinal acceleration sensor to estimate the slope.

Description of Easy Move function

  • ESP is the master ECU of the system :

It requires the EPB tightening and release It can apply hydraulic pressure It checks there is no vehicle movement when the EPB is tightened

  • EPB is a smart actuator and works like a slave ECU :

It supervises the parking brake command (button) It must take into account the ESP orders (tightening and release) It supervises the effort applied and can ajust it if necessary

  • ESP & EPB can also work in degraded mode in case of error detection

The Easy Move function is distributed between ESP and EPB :

  • To release automatically the vehicle upholding

and to authorize only the vehicle movement in the direction of driver will.

To hold the vehicle on activation of the park brake command.

Hill Assist Function :

  • To help the driver during a drive off on a hill by a vehicle upholding so that the vehicle

doesn’t go in opposite side of driver will. The time of upholding is limited (2s max).

Dynamic Braking :

  • To decelerate the vehicle by a continuous press on the PB command

Initial IPG HIL test bench provided for ESP validation Adaptation for EPB :

  • Development of a support to hold the EPB with its

cables and calipers, respecting the mounting geometry

  • Simulation of the EPB button (parking brake command)
  • Update of CAN informations (EPB inputs and outputs)
  • Update of the hydraulic model to take into account the

EPB effort applied on the rear calipers

Test bench adaptation

  • The final IPG HIL test bench can be used in 3 configurations :

ESP + EPB together ESP only (EPB simulated) : to test the ESP behaviour in case of EPB failure EPB only (ESP simulated) : to test the EPB behaviour in case of ESP failure

Example of Hill Assist activation

Simulation of a Hill Assist situation on IPG HIL test bench :

  • The driver stops the vehicle on a hill
  • The driver releases the brake pedal and presses the accelerator pedal to go away
  • During this short time interval, the ESP keeps the pressure applied to hold the vehicle,

and to avoid a movement in the opposite direction

  • The driver stops the vehicle on a hill and presses the EPB button to tighten the EPB

(manual tightening)

  • The driver releases the brake pedal, the EPB keeps the vehicle at standstill
  • The driver presses the accelerator pedal to go away, the system detects the driver’s

will and the ESP pilots the EPB release (automatic release)

Validation of Easy Move function

Challenges : Currently 6 projects use the Easy Move function. (First project : Citroën C4 Picasso in 2006) All projects have specificities that must be taken into account, for example :

  • Parking brake command with 2 or 3 states
  • Coupling with stop & start function
  • Coupling with hybrid functionalities

Constant evolution of the Easy Move logic, with new informations to validate.

Conclusion

Easy Move : complex function that needs a lot of tests to be validated. With automatic validation on IPG HIL test bench :

each software received can be checked systematically, to fulfil the request of the projects.

Next step is the integration of motorized calipers with the Easy Move function :

an adaptation of IPG HIL test bench has been already made, the update of the automatic tests will follow.
