The obesity trajectory
What are we doing to combat childhood obesity in the Vale?
Local action includes:
- Overarching Healthy Weight Framework, plus
food and physical activity plans
- Midwives/health visitors
- Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme
- Vale of Glamorgan Network of Healthy Schools
- Dietetic supervision into Barry Communities
First nutrition agenda
What are the key challenges?
- Maternal obesity dietetic service is a gap
- More pre-school settings need to be engaged
in Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme
- Need a whole nutrition approach across Flying
Start/Families First/Communities First
- Need Senior Leadership Team support for the
National Quality Award in schools
- Need a children’s obesity service (level 2 and
3)
Recommendations
The Healthy Living and Social Care Scrutiny Committee is asked to:
- 1. Note the progress to date
- 2. Support the 10 Steps to a Healthy Weight roll out
- 3. Further support the Healthy and Sustainable Pre-
school Scheme e.g. through time-in-kind
- 4. Support the NQA award in schools
- 5. Support a whole nutrition approach in the Vale
- 6. Support the development of Level 2 and 3 obesity
