Five Ws and How: Questions to answer when designing a presentation
Who is being presented to? What are their characteristics? What do they know? What don’t they know? What am I expecting from my audience? What are my desired outcomes? What do they need to know to make it worthwhile for them? What is the most effective way to bring my points across? What are the media, modes and modal ensembles that should be used to present about the topic? What narrative structure / logical presentation structure will help to bring my message across? Why do I need to do this presentation? What is my general and specific purpose of this presentation? (My purpose is to…)
What is my key message? Why is this core message interesting for my audience? What are the key points? What do I need to clarify the points? What mix of modal elements do I need to use to relay my message? When is the right time to deliver the key points and use different modes? How long should the presentation be? When is my deadline? Where will the presentation be delivered? (Will influence the modes and media are you going to use) How does my message affect various people? How should I structure my message to make it effective? How do I bring my message across effectively? (This brings together the rhetorical appeals: logic, emotion, credibility, and timing)
Questions to answer while designing a multimodal presentation
Choose a structure that works for your message. Remember the Minto Pyramid is good for relaying information in a problem-solution format. Remember that there are also many other “storytelling” narrative structures which can be used to relay
emotional appeals through narrative direction.
Choose a Narrative Structure
Plan content, structure and delivery according to Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals

The Presentation Planning Template
The presentation planning template covers all aspects discussed in class and on the
this. Start by answering the questions on the template, and expand on these questions with your own. Work from the left to the right, from the top to the bottom. As you fill in sections, revisit previous sections. Be precise in your answering. Be specific, and descriptive. Don’t be vague. Point form is permissible.
Keep your presentation short. You can remain in control, and keep people focussed on your main
Let the presentation then transition into a conversation. Note that you can still work towards emotional appeals using narrative structures in the conversation. Note that you can still employ the problem-solution format to structure clear responses in a conversation.
Transition presentations into conversations

Planning to cover all the aspects of a presentation
Use the presentation planning template provided to plan a presentation. Answer each of the sections of the template according to your required presentation. This exercise can be used to plan any presentation you have coming up in your course.
