TA3 URBAN FOREST STRATEGY Planting within Drainage Reserves

TA4 Sumps • To date we have successfully beautified some of our sumps where room is available and an integration with public open space (park land and natural areas) – Tomato Lake – Centenary Park Lake – Willow Park Lake – Smythe Lake – Norlin Park – Noble Park

TA5 Sumps • There are a lot of constraints with beautifying our residential sized sumps and sumps in some commercial areas – The large sites with enough room for planting are managed by the Water Corporation – Those which belong to the City are generally small offering limited space • Minimal space within the lot – drainage purposes – Sites are not irrigated and not easily accessible if we were to maintain low native planting – sites are currently grassed and mowed

TA6 Sumps So what are we left with?

TA7 Sumps We can plant trees around the sumps to create more canopy and improve the aesthetics. And this will assist our Urban Forest Strategy initial target! “to replace lost canopy to a coverage which meets and exceeds that of the baseline year of 2001”

TA8 More Trees in Sumps? • Sumps are not the easiest sites to work with – Drainage function will take precedence – Maintenance for drainage function will take precedence - access needs to be maintained – People don’t like “blind spots” in these sites • Passive surveillance needs to be retained

TA9 More Trees in Sumps? To identify where we can plant we first identify were we can’t plant.

TA10 Can’t Plant Here? • By default we can’t plant into the wet area of the site – the sump/basin

TA11 Can’t Plant Here? • The fence line needs to be maintained so that future canopy does not come into conflict with the neighbouring property

TA12 Can’t Plant Here? • Our Crime Prevention section recommends a minimum 2.5m gap between the canopy and the ground to assist with retaining sightlines

TA13 Can’t Plant Here? • Plus other constraints need to be considered for the management of the tree – Power lines – Lighting – Access to drainage infrastructure

TA14 Plan for room? • If we want the best canopy we need to plan for the future size of the canopy and provide room for that canopy • In order to do this the City’s Arborist will choose the best species of tree for each site • Neighbouring residents will be consulted prior to planting

TA18 How many trees? • We have identified 9 sites • We plan on planting 46 trees • And we gain an estimated 3,611 m2 canopy at maturity

TA20 We gain canopy • Selby Park and Sump at Greenshields Way – 13 trees providing an estimated 1,021 m 2 when mature • Severin Walk Planting in Winter 2015 – 11 trees providing an estimated 864 m 2 when mature
