University of South Florida 2015 Quality Enhancement Plan Overview The University of South Florida has developed a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) designed to prepare students to lead meaningful and productive lives in a global society. The goal of the QEP, entitled The Global Citizens Project, is to develop students’ ability to engage constructively with diverse people, places, events, challenges, and opportunities – our definition

  • f a global citizen. Three competencies address this goal and guide the development of our

QEP: 1) Students will possess knowledge of global and cultural systems. 2) Students will be able to analyze global and cultural interrelationships and interdependencies across time and place. 3) Students will be able to develop and/or apply context-appropriate actions to address complex and/or unfamiliar situations. In order to achieve these competencies, we have outlined three process goals and accompanying objectives. GCP Process Goal 1: Global FKL GCP Process Goal 2: Global Pathways GCP Process Goal 3: Global Citizen Award

Students will be introduced to global and cultural competencies in general education. Students will practice and apply global and cultural competencies within the context

  • f their discipline(s) of study.

Students will reinforce global and cultural competencies through curricular and co- curricular opportunities outside

  • f general education and the

major. Objective 1.1 Objective 2.1 Objective 3.1 Infuse the learning outcomes of the Global Citizens Project into general education courses across key areas of the FKL Core Curriculum. Infuse the learning outcomes of the Global Citizens Project into degree programs. Develop a two-tiered Global Citizen Award program that encourages students to participate in a variety of global/cultural curricular and co- curricular opportunities. Objective 1.2 Objective 2.2 Objective 3.2 Infuse the learning outcomes of the Global Citizens Project into capstone courses of the FKL Core Curriculum. Identify and/or develop globally and/or culturally focused co- curricular experiences within the degree program. Infuse the learning outcomes of the Global Citizens Project into elective courses.

Global Citizen Award

To earn the Global Citizen Award, complete General Education requirements* and the following:

 8 on‐campus global/cultural events  TWO different globally/culturally engaged activities:

 6 credit hours of foreign language study at the intermediate level or higher  9 credit hours of Global Citizen coursework outside of general education  An academic year in the Global Citizens Living Learning Community  Short‐term study abroad (min. 1 week of a USF program)  45 contact hours of pre‐approved globally/culturally engaged curricular or co‐curricular community service  45 hours of globally/culturally engaged undergraduate research (~3 hrs a week during a single semester)  Other global/cultural activities, as approved *Transfer students: please submit a short essay on your global experience(s) in your past general education curriculum. All Students: You need to have completed your general education requirements to earn the Award, but you can get started on completing the above activities on your first day of matriculation! Upon completion of the Global Citizen Award, you will earn a Global Citizen cord (for graduation) and certificate, which will be awarded to you at the Celebration of Leadership

  • Awards. You also become eligible to apply for a $2500 Global Citizen Study Abroad

Global Citizen Award

To earn the Global Citizen Scholar Award, complete the Global Citizen Award and the following:

 30 contact hours of pre‐approved globally/culturally engaged curricular or co‐curricular community service (above Global Citizen Award requirements)  ONE of the following pre‐approved activities:

 An additional, separate study abroad experience (min. 3 weeks of a USF program)  Globally/culturally engaged semester‐long internship  Globally/culturally engaged research/community engagement project (IDS 4940)  An additional 6 credit hours of foreign language study at the intermediate level or higher  Global Citizen Capstone course

 ONE of the following:

 Presentation at the Undergraduate Research and Arts Colloquium  Culminating performance; artistic expression (need to define better)  Global Citizen Portfolio Upon completion of the Global Citizen Scholar Award, you will earn a Global Citizen Scholar Gold Medallion and certificate, which will be awarded to you at the Celebration of Leadership

  • Awards. You will also be recognized at Commencement!
