HEALTH PARTNERS UPDATE

Using Healthy Lifestyles Curriculum:

WHAT: Holistic health workshop designed to assist participants in setting and achieving goals using self-determination. WHO: Individuals with a developmental disability and their identified health partner. HOW: Delivered in 4-6 initial workshop sessions followed by 6 monthly follow up meetings WHERE: Pilot programming completed in Lexington. Currently reaching

  • ut to communities within 90 miles of Lexington. Our hope is to

expand programming in the future to reach all areas of Kentucky.

PILOT PROGRAMMING

  • Two separate groups held November 2015
  • 12 hours of programming broken up over 6 days
  • Focus on holistic health (physical, social, emotional, values)
  • Stresses self determination- goals chosen by participants
  • 6 dyads for a total of 12 participants:
  • Siblings
  • Parent/child
  • CLS worker/client

PILOT OUTCOMES: GOALS

  • Examples of goals created:
  • Exercise/walk 4 times per week for 30 minutes
  • Plan a menu for dinner during week nights
  • Increase water consumption by having at least two glasses per

day

  • Meditate and journal weekly and find something to smile about

every day

  • Work on strengthening faith by praying more
  • Decrease stress by having bath/reading time 3 times per week
  • Cook at least two meals at home per week

  • After just one month:
  • Losing weight
  • Drinking more water
  • More mindful of food choices
  • Preparing food using healthier methods
  • Exercising more
  • Creating a weekly menu

Talk about the difference between clean and dirty

  • Look at pictures – sort them into clean and dirty categories

Show pictures of people using socially appropriate and inappropriate hygiene
