United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF AN INCLUSIVE BLUE ECONOMY: THE GENDER AND CAPACITY IMPERATIVES Alumni Meeting November 28, 2018 Nairobi, Kenya Mariamalia Rodrguez Chaves Deputy
THE OCEAN IS CRUCIAL FOR LIFE AND ECONOMIES
Blue Economy
Seeks to promote: Economic growth. Responsible production and consumption. Social inclusion. Improvement of livelihoods. Environmental sustainability of the ocean. Linking global processes:
- Oceans
are central to the delivery of the 2030 Agenda for S.D.
- SDG 14 recognizes sustainable
- cean-based economies.
Gender progress within ocean affairs
Gender issues have been over-looked in ocean sectors and activities. Women underrepresented in bodies established by UNCLOS: In ITLOS only 3 (from 21) members are women. No woman has been Secretary General or Deputy Secretary General of ISA. Lack of statistics on ocean-related employment of women.
Need to recognize the value of women’s labour.
