Search Task Definition

  • TRECVid video has been entirely structured and post-

produced in nature … news, NASA videos, etc. … with much metadata available;

  • This has allowed reverse-engineering of the production

process, e.g. story segmentation in TV News to support search;

  • As often, the material to be searched is unstructured, raw,

unprocessed, and with little or no metadata;

  • Examples are personal (home) video, CCTV, and rushes;
  • This year’s BBC Rushes pilot task was a first venture into

this kind of data to explore what was possible;

  • Six groups took part;

BBC Rushes

  • Rushes are raw video material directly as shot by camera

with 40x more material than is used;

  • Rushes characteristics:

n Natural sound only; n Actors not always present, no dialogue; n Much repeated material such as re-takes; n Long sequences with nothing happening;

  • Essentially, it contains stock footage, but much is re-usable

and potentially very valuable, though only the original production teams know the content;

  • Indexed only by program, name, date, dept.

  • BBC Archive have kindly provided 50 hours in

MPEG-1 format, shot for a travel program, plus some limited metadata and keyframes;
