  1. The Biogeographical Process Title Theo van der Sluis, Carlos Sunyer Subtitle/Author EASME/LIFE meeting

  2. Title What is the Biogeographical Process? The BGP: • Is a voluntary process fulfilling the obligations set in the Nature Directives, • Enhances co-ordinated and collaborative approaches among Member States sharing a common biogeographical context, • Is strongly depending on active involvement of Member States and stakeholders / NGOs, • Sees Natura 2000 as a network of protected areas and as a network of people

  3. Title What is the Biogeographical Process? The Natura 2000 BGP is: • a contribution to the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020: – Target 1: Protect species and habitats – Action 1: Complete the Natura 2000 network and ensure its good management. • an integral part of the Nature Action Plan: – Priority B: Building political ownership and strengthening compliance – Action 6: Bring together public authorities and stakeholders from different Member States at the biogeographical region level to address common challenges, including on cross-border issues.

  4. What does the Biogeographical Process want Title to achieve? Basic questions to be discussed for N2000 throughout the EU: • What are the common issues in management of habitats over the biogeographical region? • What are the potential solutions to these problems (incl. best practice)? What special management measures are required to accommodate habitats and key associated species? • Are there concrete possibilities for cooperation or cooperative action linked to the preferred solutions that could be launched at the seminar? In the end, to agree on biogeographical-level roadmaps for cooperative action

  5. Who is organizing the Biogeographical Process? Title DG-Env, with Consortium: 6 partners, spread over different biogeographical regions of the EU • Wageningen Research • NatureBureau Ltd. • Regional Environmental Centre • Estonian University of Life Sciences • TerraEcogest • Mãe d’água

  6. Title What activities? • Organization of Biogeographical seminars • Organization of networking events • Preparation of background documentation for the seminars • Facilitation of meetings • Website maintenance and preparation of newsletters (3/yr) • Support for Commission e.g. in meetings re N2000
