Indicator and definition Target: 11.4: Strengthen efforts to protect and UNESCO Institute for Statistics safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage Indicator: 11.4.1: Total expenditure (public and private) per capita spent on the preservation, protection and conservation of all cultural and natural heritage, by:  type of heritage (cultural, natural, mixed, World Heritage Centre designation)  level of government (national, regional, and local/municipal)  type of expenditure (operating expenditure/investment)  type of private funding (donations in kind, private non- 2 profit sector, sponsorship)

  3. Current work taking place on the indicator  This is clearly a Tier 3 indicator UNESCO Institute for Statistics  UIS will organize an expert meeting to discuss cultural and natural heritage statistics  Meeting tentatively scheduled for 12-14 September 2016 3

  4. Plan to develop the methodology and international standard  International accepted definitions already exist for many UNESCO Institute for Statistics concepts (Cultural/natural heritage, conservation, preservation)  2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics, which uses internationally accepted definitions from the UNESCO Heritage convention and ICOMOS which is a statutory body to the convention  Financial statistics  UIS to develop a global survey on cultural and natural heritage statistics  For indicator 11.4.1  For thematic indicators  In collaboration with other relevant organisations – to be identified, including UNESCO World Heritage Convention Section 4

  5. Plan for global reporting  Global data collection through a survey administered UNESCO Institute for Statistics by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics  Timeline to be developed  Depending on resources and progress in developing methodology  Interested partners please contact us 5
